Nsostamokiiwans, To Understand Little Things, (Explanation)
Telling time involves using numbers 1 through 30 and a few additional phrases. You will also notice the root verb, "dibaa" used whenever measurement, such as distance, length, weight, or time, is discussed. The root, "dibaa" also appears in the nouns related to these verbs.

Wenesh ensa dibaaganeg? - What time is it?
You will sometimes hear speakers use an everyday (vernacular) version of the same question:
Wenesh epiichak? - What time is it?
Telling time in Anishinaabemowin follows a regular pattern. Most typically, speakers will note the minutes before or after the hour.
You should learn the following pattern:
|
jibwaa / before |
|
| ( a number 1 - 29) dibaagans |
or |
(one of the hours) dibaaganeg. |
|
shkwaa / after |
|
Some of the words for hours are irregular. You can see that most are derived from the numbers. The half hour is indicated by adding the word "shaa'aptaa" for "half."
