Mizise - Turkey

The following handout was written for a youth activity at the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History in November of 2007.

Take a look at the turkey in its habitat.

Mizise aawe.
A Turkey this is.

Chizhaazhaago mizise gii giisaanaa'an mitigwabiin ge-objikaaznaan miinwaa baashkizigan.
A long time ago turkey was hunted a bow was used and a gun.

Noongwa dash miijime adawegamigong giishpinaanaa'an.
Today food is at a store where it is bought.

Think about the difference in how food was gathered long ago and how we gather our food now. Do we know where all of our food comes from? What would we eat if we ate only Michigan foods in season? Knowing answers to these questions shows respect for the cycle of life here on earth.

Another important thing to consider is how we use our resources? Is there waste when we eat? Do we keep any reminder of the animals who feed us?

Miigwaansag n'giniwenmaanaanig. The feathers we look after them.	N'objikaaznaanig pii dibaadaayang. We use them when we tell stories.
