Words of Wiiyaas
Note: This poem is written in English on the left. The Ojibwe, which follows, takes the poem one step farther. So that you can enjoy that transition, a literal translation of the Ojibwe is on the right.
Written and read by Margaret Noodin
Red to white / waabshkaa-miskwaa / white to red
Raw to ready / jibwaa-ishkwa n'da zaaskookwimi / before and after we are sizzling
Carnivores confess / giishpin wi bishigendaaming / if you like it
As one muscle becomes another / weweni miijinaan wiiyaas / eat carefully the meat
As beads of heat sizzle / n'bwezomi pii gizhaadeg / sweating in the heat
Oil melting into energy / mide ezhi bimaadziying / the oil of life
So dangerous in excess / aangwaamziin / take care
Still so satisfying / wenesh waayamaan / what you like
As midnight sweat / aabita-dibikad minendam / at midnight the delight of
Sweet bacon / wishkobii wiiyaas / sweet meat
