Below are summaries of voluntary comments made by several Orgainzational Studies students regarding their opinions of specific University courses and their instructors. It should be noted that the information below does not necessarily reflect the views of OSSA, its student leaders, or its members. Not all approved Organizational Studies courses are included in this list and information for the courses listed may be incomplete due to changing professors or the fact that students at the meeting had limited knowledge about certain courses or professors. Keeping all of this in mind, this information is being posted strictly as a resource for students to reference while making course registration decisions.

American Culture
342 - History of the Family in the US (4)
  • Professor Morantz-Sanchez is a fairly average instructor, and is very helpful
  • coursework includes six 5-6 page papers, a midterm and a final exam
Cultural Anthropology
330 - Culture, Thought, & Meaning (4)
  • Professor Mueggler often seems unprepared for lecture and does not always effectively communicate information in lectures
  • course grading was inconsistent and not always based on lectures
  • class materials were extremely dry to read, and lectures were extremely uninteresting
  • coursework includes heavy reading, six 4-6 page papers and two bluebook exams
  • class can be taken for ECB credit
333 - Non-Western Legal Systems (3)
  • Professor Owusu shows several videos in class, but his lectures are often very tough to sit through
  • coursework includes three medium-length papers and no exams
  • if you do the work, you should get an "A" in the class
Communication Studies
351 - Structure and Function of Media Systems (4)
  • when taken with Professor Brentar, lectures were very boring and grading was not based on what was covered in lecture
  • coursework included four quizzes, three 3-page papers, and one 10-page final paper
  • class can be taken for ECB credit
361 - Proceses of Mediated Communication (4)
  • class taken with Doctor Young, who was a very laid-back, cool instructor
  • coursework included nine 2-3 page papers that were graded very easily, and combined to form a final 30-page paper; 2 exams were also administered, but cheat sheets (of any size) were allowed
  • class can be taken for ECB credit
371 - Media, Culture, and Society (4)
  • Professor Vaillant is a "terrible lecturer", his classes are very boring, and he is a very harsh grader
381 - Media Impact on Knowledge, Values, and Behavior (4)
  • Professor Kristen Harrison is a very engaging instructor
  • coursework ncludes two 4-6 page papers, one 2-page paper, and 3 exams (which were said to be easy and fairly graded)
  • class can be taken for ECB credit
Economics
323 - Economics and Gender (3)
  • students hadn't had Professor Malone personally, but had heard that he is an excellent lecturer and that the course was good in general
430 - Business Abroad (3)
  • Professor Adams (a former Golden Apple winner) is a captivating lecturer
438 - Economics of Health Services (3)
  • Professor Rilstone seems uninterested in lectures, and does not reply to student e-mails
  • coursework includes three bluebook exams (that are scored by "rough" graders), as well as several group projects
History
368 - History of the Family in the US (4)

466 - US from 1901-1933 (3)
  • Professor Sidney Fine is a previous Golden Apple winner, and is a very enjoyable lecturer (who will be retiring next year)
  • the course requires "a lot of work, but is very worth it," and it is crucial that students go to class because exam material comes from lecture
  • coursework includes two difficult bluebook exams and one 12-15 page paper
  • if you go to the professor's office hours more than once, he will tend to raise your grade in the class
Mathematics
427 - Retirement Plans and Other Employee Benefit Plans (3)
  • this class is great for anyone interested in working in HR, covering everything from pension plans, 401Ks, health insurance packages, etc.
  • coursework is fairly easy and includes several small papers, three exams, and four quizzes
Political Science
421 - American State Government (3)
  • when taken with a different professor (Allerd), coursework included two "fair" bluebook exams and a 13-15 page term paper
Psychology
360 - Introduction to Organizational Psychology (4)
  • Professor Sandelands is an excellent professor who presents interesting course material in an engaging manner class is largely based on Freudian principles and studies human interaction and behavior in group settings
  • coursework includes three short papers, as well as two bluebook exams (which are fair if you attend lecture and actually do the course reading)
361 - Advanced Laboratory in Organizational Psychology (4)
  • class is focused around a semester-long personal research project that begins with the development of a topic and hypothesis and follows through the distribution of surveys and data analysis, finally concluding in a 15-page project paper
  • class focuses on survey methods and important topics in organizations today, and provides a great hands-on learning experience for anyone interested in doing research or working in the consulting industry
  • coursework (not including final project paper) includes 2 multiple-choice exams and an individual presentation of the personal project
  • course can be taken for ECB credit
380 - Introduction to Social Psychology (4)
  • Professor Serena Chen is very interested and passionate in the course material, which makes lectures more engaging for students
  • subject matter is fun and interesting course because it relates to a lot of real-world, everyday behaviors and occurrences
  • coursework includes one 4-page paper, 2 projects, and three multiple choice exams (which are weighted to count your best exam the most and your worst exam the least)
411 - Gender and Group Process in a Multicultural Context (3)
  • Professor Quay is a very laid-back, cool instructor
  • coursework includes a weekly 2-page journal entry and two projects (no exams)
  • this course is "an easy A"
464 - Group Behavior in Organizations (3)
  • Professor Fleming is a friendly and approachable professor
  • the subject matter is very interesting, although the course reading tends to be a bit dull
  • coursework includes a group project and two multiple-choice exam
561- Advanced Topics in Organizational Psychology (3)
  • classes consist primarily of group discussions and role-play exercises, with occasional lecture or videos
  • coursework includes one 8-page paper and six short quizzes (which are not typically made up of fair questions)
  • course is usually cross-listed under a section of Psychology 581 - Advanced Topics in Social Psychology
Sociology
210 - Elementary Statistics (4)
  • Professor Harris is a somewhat boring lecturer, although subject matter is "math related to real life"
  • course is not any easier or more difficult than Stats 402
  • coursework includes regular homework and three exams
Statistics
402 - Introducton to Statistics (4)
  • Professor Gunderson is a former Golden Apple winner, and is the best instructor to have for this class (although Professors Rothman and Bingham aren't bad)
  • many GSIs for the class do not speak very clear english, so be prepared to face that in labs
  • coursework includes regular homework assignments and 3 exams
  • it is important to keep up in class work

315 - Management of Personnel (3)
  • Professor Lerche is excellent and draws heavily on her own real-world experiences
  • course focuses on leadership and leadership theory in HR management
  • the course's reading list for this class is extrememly engaging and interesting, including The Dilbert Principle and Sacred Hoops by Phil Jackson (the former coach of the Los Angeles Lakers
  • coursework includes a 5-page paper, 2 blue book exams (one that was partially take-home), and a group project/presentation that is fun to work on
