Seventy-eight first-year PharmD students took part in the White Coat Ceremony held Oct. 17 at Rackham Auditorium, making it the largest entering class in the College’s 132-year history. Keynote speaker, Lesbia Hernandez, PharmD’81, dean of the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy, recalled her own student experiences as she addressed the topic of professionalism. Hernandez invoked author Stephen Covey’s list of 13 behaviors for professionalism in the workplace. P-4 Christine Schumacher, 2006 Dee and Fred Lyons Leadership Scholar, led the P-1s in the APhA pledge of professionalism. P-3 Marcy DelMonte, president of the College’s APhA-ASP chapter, led the P-1s in recitation of the APhA’s Code of Ethics. Class of 2011 members were then welcomed into the profession by Michigan Pharmacists Association president and alumnus, Charles Hastings, BSPharm’76, and welcomed to the College by Pharmacy Alumni Board of Governors president, Sangeeta Goel, PharmD’98.
Two-thirds of the PharmD Class of 2011 are from Michigan; the balance come from Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin, as well as Canada, Hong Kong, and Nigeria.
Although 39 members completed their pre-pharmacy coursework at a U-M campus, 23 different institutions contributed to the pre-pharmacy preparation of the first-year PharmD class. Consistent with previous years, P-1 class members boast an overall mean grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
