Pharmacy was first taught at the University of Michigan in 1868 in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. A School of Pharmacy was established December 29, 1876, the first in a state university in the United States. In 1916 the School was renamed the College of Pharmacy. The College is a member of the University's Division of Health Sciences. Although it is an integral part of the larger institution, the College of Pharmacy has an enrollment of around 300 students. As a result, pharmacy students have access to all the facilities offered by a large university, yet enjoy the advantages of belonging to a small, close-knit group. Since its organization in 1900, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) has set the educational standards for the practice of pharmacy. The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is a member of the AACP. The University of Michigan's Doctor of Pharmacy program is accredited by the American Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 N. Clark Street 2500, Chicago, IL 60602-5109. Phone: (312) 664-3575; or fax:(312) 644-4652 or (312) 664-7008. Students may review accreditation documents in the Office of Academic Services or in the Office of the Dean.
