Phi Rho Sigma Medical Society

220 North Ingalls Ann Arbor, MI 48104 (734) 769-3944 (House Phone)

Imagine this. It's 5:00 pm and your anatomy lab group calls it quits. You've just had eight miserable hours of classes. You and your weary lab partners are heading home. They have to trek through snow or brave icy roads to make it back. Then they'll have to spend the next hour making dinner. But not you. You take a short stroll under a covered walkway. You walk in the door to find that dinner is ready and on the table. You take a seat amongst friends for a delicious and relaxing meal. You've saved yourself valuable time and energy each day, and all because you made the best decision of your life. You decided to live at Phi Rho Sigma.

Phi Rho Sigma is a co-ed medical society. Just down the street from the medical center is the historic English Tudor house we call home. Thirty-two women and men from all four medical school classes live, eat, and study together here in an environment that supports the difficult lifestyle of medical students. Phi Rho Sigma is an easy choice for many reasons:

Cost: Despite the high cost of living in Ann Arbor, Phi Rho is inexpensive. Rent is $450 per month and includes all utilities. A full meal plan is $200 a month while the meal plan including only dinner is $160 per month. It is mandatory for M1s and M2s to take a full meal package. Every student at Phi Rho has their own room. Shop around if you must, but no other place offers so many benefits for such a bargain price.

Location, location, location: The house is located on the corner of Catherine and North Ingalls, just two blocks from the U of M Medical School and the University Hospitals. We're so close, you can afford to hit the snooze button a few times without being late to class. When the Michigan winter hits, you'll appreciate the covered walkway leading directly to school.

Food: Anyone in the Medical School can tell you about Phi Rho's food. Master Chef Claudia prepares a full lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, as well as a Sunday brunch that others can only dream about. In addition to main courses like stir-fry, turkey, seafood, barbecue, and ethnic dishes, Claudia will provide for a wide range of special dietary needs (lactose-free foods, kosher foods, etc.). There is a vegetarian dish at every meal as well as fresh salad, fruit, and desserts. If it's your birthday, you can expect your favorite cake made fresh and decorated with candles! Claudia will accommodate requests and is always receptive to new recipes. The kitchen is always open for a late night snack.

Amenities: We have ample workout equipment, including a stair-climber and free weights. The washer and dryer are free. For convenient computing, we have wireless internet and a new PC for those without their own. There's a storage room, a bike room, a TV room (full cable), and a study room with old notes and tests, and reference books. As Leila (Class of 2004) says, "The bathrooms are nicely decorated and very clean." That's thanks to our recent $80,000 bathroom renovations and the house maid service.

The Phi Rho Community: Phi Rho Sigma is more than just a place to live-it quickly becomes your home, and its members your family. We are a diverse group hailing from all over the country with many different backgrounds and interests. Because you live with students from other classes, there's always someone to help you decide which books to buy, where to do rotations, how the residency match works, etc. Within the medical school, Phi Rho members are involved in most activities or interest groups. Phi Rho also offers several competitive intramural sports teams year-round. Some of our exclusive annual social events include "Girls' Night" (sorry guys), the Super Bowl Party, and the pool tournament. Each month, we invite important faculty members from the U of M Medical School to join us for dinner and conversation. In addition, Phi Rho is famous for our big Jello-shot, Progressive, and Black & White parties, widely renowned as the best med school parties all year. "I chose Phi Rho for the convenience," says Richard (Class of 2005), "but I stayed because of the friends I've made and the times I've had."
