Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority for women in engineering and engineering technology. Our sisters are initially enrolled in the college of engineering or college of engineering technology at their respective schools, and actively take part in campus social and service activities. As with all Greek organizations, the meaning behind our symbols is kept within the sisterhood. However, we do have several symbols which are near and dear to our hearts that we can share with you:
Our flower is the orchid
Our colors are wine red and silver
Our mascot is Sigmand Penguin
Our motto is "Together We Build The Future"
Why Choose Phi Sigma Rho?
Phi Sigma Rho provides female engineering students with a network of academic support and encouragement. Phi Sigma Rho has now been accepted as
part of the Panhellenic Association at the Univeristy of Michigan. We also have members in Gamma Sigma Alpha, the National Academic Greek Honor Society. The sisters of Phi Sigma Rho understand the time commitment involved with an engineering major. Our sisters strive for academic excellence, but also place emphasis on the need to have fun. Every sister of Phi Sigma Rho wants to encourage you to grow socially as well as academically.
Engineering is a traditionally male field. Phi Sigma Rho offers a close friendship and sisterhood that women in engineering don't always find in their predominantly male classes. There is a certain commitment to our sisterhood, but the return is a lifetime of friendship and memories.
Phi Sigma Rho was founded September 24, 1984 at Purdue University by two young women, Abby McDonald and Rhasmi Khanna. It was Abby's desire to be
part of the Greek system that led to a conversation one night in the fall of their freshman year. During this discussion, the idea for creating a
social sorority that could accommodate a rigorous engineering schedule was born. It was only a short time later that the first chapter of Phi Sigma
Rho was created with 10 charter members.
Since our founding, Phi Sigma Rho has become an inspiration to many women in engineering. There are many national chapters of Phi Sigma Rho and
we have alumnae located throughout the world. Although the distance between sisters may sometimes be far, the common bond of sisterhood will
always carry on.
Phi Sigma Rho at the University of Michigan was founded in the winter semester of 2000, creating the Eta Chapter of the National Phi Sigma Rho Sorority. Each semester, the sisters of Phi Sigma Rho not only participate in social activities together; we also enjoy doing community service as a group. Our philanthropies include the Girl Scouts of America and the American Cancer Society. We had our first formal dance in March 2003, and we are looking forward for sisterhood and friendship for years to come.
