Our handout, “Student PIRGs and Higher Education” includes a partial list of PIRG accomplishments over the past 30 years.  However, it only includes accomplishments of state PIRGs that currently have chapters, so it does not include PIRGIM accomplishments.  The following is a partial list of PIRGIM accomplishments.


 

1973-PIRGIM study of deceptive gas price advertising leads Michigan Attorney General to adopt fair advertising guideline, which nearly every Michigan Gas Station complied with

 

1974- PIRGIM helps win Generic Drug Law for Michigan.

 

1976- PIRGIM campaigns for Michigan referendum enacting state Bottle Bill.

 

1977- PIRGIM helps win Michigan Freedom of Information law.

 

1978- PIRGIM helps lead effort to win key protections for tenants in Michigan.

 

1979- PIRGIM sponsors largest rally against nuclear power in Michigan’s history.

 

1981- PIRGIM organizes the very first “Take Back the Night” march at the University of Michigan.

 

1984- PIRGIM helps win Michigan phone company rate hike reduction of $378.5 million.

 

1986- PIRGIM helps win right-to-know law for toxic substances in Michigan workplaces.

 

1988- PIRGIM helps win ballot initiative allocating $425 million for toxic waste cleanup in Michigan.

1990- PIRGIM helps win Michigan’s toxic art supply labeling law.

 

1990- PIRGIM wins nation’s toughest Polluter Pays legislation in Michigan.

 

1993- PIRGIM wins landfill cleanup and curbside recycling programs in Riverview, Michigan.

 

1997- PIRGIM wins $460,000 in water pollution lawsuit against New Haven Foundry in Macomb, Michigan.

 

2001- PIRGIM helps win bill provisions to control sprawl in Michigan

 

2002- PIRGIM helps win ban on drilling Great Lakes from Michigan Shorline.
