University of Michigan Task Force on
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
ON CAMPUS

This task force, comprised of faculty, staff, students and administrators, was appointed through the President's office to address the problem of violence against women. Through ongoing communication with other groups on campus and in the community, we are working on various aspects of this problem:

1. Assessing the nature and scope of the problem of violence against women on campus.

2. Developing and proposing actions that can be taken, both immediately and over the long term, to successfully address the problem.

3. Implementing those actions that are approved by U-M administration; and monitoring progress of the actions implemented.

OUR MAIN FOCUS:
Increased safety for all women -- students, staff, faculty, administrators and their family members, whether on campus or at home -- by creating a community free from all forms of violence against women. Forms of violence include sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, threats of violence and other abusive behavior. By increasing the safety of women, the entire community will benefit.

To achieve this goal, it is important to approach the issue of violence against women from different perspectives: increasing physical safety on campus; including violence against women in curricular content; and working toward changing attitudes towards women that condone, or may encourage, acts of violence towards women.

The ultimate goal is to change campus culture so that violence against women will no longer be accepted, thus making the campus environment safer and healthier for all women in the University of Michigan community.
