What we need:
What we have, by file type:
-
3DS - 3DS files
-
Seem to be part of the modeling/texturing basis for original project
-
Can be imported into 3D Studio Max
-
According to Samir's suggestion, we should scrap these and work from the
AutoCAD models
-
They should be checked to verify that they are a subset of the AutoCAD
models
-
DWG - AutoCAD files
-
Seem to be part of the modeling/texturing basis for original project
-
Can be read by AutoCAD or imported into 3D Studio Max
-
According to Samir, these are the files that we should probably base our
work on
-
DXF - AutoCAD drawing interchange
-
?
-
Samir says they are unneeded... they were created from the DWG files
-
They should probably be checked to see that they are a subset of the AutoCAD
files
-
MLI - AutoCAD Render Materials Library
-
?
-
Seem to be texture maps and such for rendering in AutoCAD
-
Samir says they probably just point to the image files we have - can't
be used anywhere else, and can probably be scrapped
-
BMP - Bitmap image files
-
? used for ?
-
Not used in any VRML files, delete?
-
GIF - gif Image files
-
EBS - Worldup script file
-
WorldUP scripts
-
Could be examined by the scripters to see what types of scripts were envisioned
-
IV - Inventor Files
-
Created from AutoCAD to work on the BOOM
-
Probably not needed for our current work.
-
JPG - jpeg Image files
-
used for textures
-
The relevant ones have been moved into the new directory
-
Could still look at other jpg's to see if there's anything we want
-
MAT - ?Material Files?
-
WorldUp color support files
-
Automatically generated by Worldup - not needed unless we do something
with Worldup
-
NFF - Neutral File Format
-
Created by WorldUP or WorldToolKit
-
They join coordinates, MAT and texture files for WorldUp
-
Could be opened by WorldModeler and exported to 3DSMax
-
Probably not needed unless we need to go figure out how original model
was put together
-
RGB - rgb Image files
-
Used for textures in Worldup (SGI)
-
SGI images - not standard anymore
-
Probably not needed unless we have some that we want to convert to jpg's
-
TGA - targa Image files
-
Used for textures in Worldup (NT, SGI)
-
Supported only by WorldUP
-
Probably not needed unless we have some that we want to convert to jpg's
-
TN - ???
-
UP - WorldUp or WorldToolKit files?
-
Presumably used for assembling the models into worlds
-
Cannot be read by anything except WorldUP/WTK
-
Can be exported to VRML 1.0
-
WAV - wave Audio files
-
Presumably used for sounds in the world
-
WRL - Currently VRML 1.0 models of the world
-
Have not been able to successfully convert the more important ones to VRML
2.0
What we have, by "logical groups" according to Dr. Huang:
-
outside
-
3ds:lawn2, courtyd, 1,10,11,12,13,14,2,3,6,7,8,9, taub
-
jpg: grass2, yellobrk, cthrupine, 10,12,13,4,7
-
lobby
-
3ds: plant, lobby3
-
jpg: bricks, bench1, dirt2
-
elevator
What it seems like we could do:
-
Create an AutoCAD/3DSMax model of the world
-
This can be exported to VRML 1.0 or VRML 2.0 for incorporation of scripting
-
How to do this?
-
Work from the basis files available (3DS Max & AutoCAD) and re-create
the model in 3DS max?
-
Samir says that he believes all original models were created in AutoCAD
and then exported from there. We should probably start back up with
the AutoCAD files and rebuild the world with them.
-
Figure out which textures were used where. Could be done by inspection
of the VRML 1.0 files.
-
What would help in doing this?
-
A "map" of which files were used for which parts of the model
-
A "map" of the image files. Probably can create a consistent set
of images, in either GIF or JPG as appropriate, since these are the current
standards.
