Height Estimation Experiment

This experiment takes the participant up to look out on three heights through the window of a virtual building and off three heights of a virtual platform.  The participant gives estimates of the six heights, which we will be correlating with answers from questionnaires they fill out.  There is an initial questionnaire form which measures things like fear of heights and clarity of mental imagery.  There are also questions afterwards to examine what the experience was like.  We hope to discover whether these things consistently affect the judgement of height.
Benefits of participating: you get to experience virtual reality (VR) with one of the most sophisticated types of VR equipment currently available - the CAVE.  You also get to help us advance our understanding of perception in virtual environments.

Possible risks include some fear if you fear heights, and the possiblity of motion sickness or "cybersickness" which occasionally happens to people who use VR.  We minimize this by making the entire experience short.  Anyone can close their eyes or stop at any time as this is completely voluntary.

Participants can be anyone who has binocular vision and is an adult who can understand these risks and benefits.  Full discussion is available in the consent document.  This document is in Rich Text format and should be filled out and brought to the session if you want to participate.

To participate, you need to sign the consent form and fill out the initial questionnaire. Then bring these to the VR lab in the Media Union (room 1405) at your scheduled time.  This is located on the first floor.  If you enter the front and pass around the circulation desk, you will enter a central collaboration area with branches to the left, right, and further ahead.  Turn to the left and you will see it through glass doors.  The lab is locked, so you may need to knock.
