General Policies

Attendance: Your attendance and participation in discussion is expected and required. An unexcused absence will result in a deduction of 5 points from your final section grade. Absences are considered excused only if you have to participate in a university function, are ill, or have a family emergency. You must notify me in advance if you need to miss a section and you are responsible for any material covered.

Late Papers: Late assignments will receive a 3-point deduction each day they are late – including weekends. I do not typically check my mailbox or the drop box outside my office on the weekends, so if you have to turn in assignments on Saturday or Sunday, you may e-mail it to me as an attachment. Any assignments that you have not handed in by 5pm on the last day of class (Dec. 6 or 8) will receive a zero. Because you are given a good deal of choice in due dates for the assignments in this class, there will be no extensions granted and no exceptions to the late assignment policy.

Discussion Ground Rules: Because this section will involve a great deal of discussion, it is extremely important that we create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, supported, and encouraged to express his or her concerns. Integral to creating and maintaining this environment is mutual respect and open-mindedness. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Listen carefully to others’ ideas (especially if they are different from yours or if you have a lot to say).
  2. Respect others’ rights to hold opinions different from yours.
  3. Challenge yourself to see things from others’ points of view, regardless of how you and they may differ in terms of age, race/ethnicity, gender, nationality, or otherwise.
  4. Be courteous by not interrupting others of having private conversations while others are speaking.
  5. Allow everyone a chance to talk. Take the lead to ask if others have something to add.
  6. Support your statements; use evidence and provide reasoning for your points.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism does not merely consist of turning in an assignment written by someone else. Plagiarism also occurs when sources of ideas or words are not cited. Proof of plagiarism or cheating results in you getting a zero on the assignment, and possibly an F in the class.

Help with Writing: English Composition Board (1111 Angel Hall: 764-0429) offers a variety of services, including online reviews of rough drafts www.lsa.umich.edu/swc/OWL/owl.html.

Counseling Services: Sometimes certain material can bring up personal feelings or reactions that students may be unprepared to deal with. Sometimes events in your life may give rise to these feelings as well. Counseling and Psychological Services may be able to help (3100 Michigan Union: 764-8312).
