Due Date:

Click here for rubric.  If you need to find a classmate for a peer review, email students in your section  - psy350.sec004@umich.edu, psy350.sec006@umich.edu, psy350.sec011@umich.edu - and hopefully you can find someone to exchange papers with.  If your paper is too personal for a classmate to read, email me by 12pm Friday Nov. 17, so I can make alternative arrangements.

Developmental Project Ideas
10 points

Due Date:
Section 4 & 6: Wednesday, September 27
Section 11: Friday, September 29

The first step of completing your term project is to let me know the topic you have chosen. In a 1 page, typed paper, please address the following:

1) what topic have you chosen

2) the developmental issues at stake

3) the multiple perspectives on the issue (i.e., how you plan to discuss/analyze the topic from the points of view of people of different ages, gender, race, culture, history, etc.)

4) your personal experience relevant to the topic

Include at least 3 key references that you intend to use.

Developmental Project Outlines
20 points

Due Date:
Section 4 & 6: Wednesday, October 18
Section 11: Friday, October 20

The second step in your term project is the preparation of a detailed outline of your paper. In this outline, it is extremely important that you show me how your paper will be structured and organized, how and where the references will be used to support your arguments, how you will examine developmental issues, and how you will incorporate multiple perspectives on your topic that vary by age, gender, culture, or history.

Your outline should be about 2 pages long, with at least 5 key references listed on a separate "References page" according to APA style. Remember to identify where each reference will be used in the proposed outline.

Additionally, attached to the outline will be (1) a photocopied title page and Abstract of ONE key reference that you intend to use in your paper and (2) a 2-3 page, double-spaced summary and critique of the article. For articles describing specific studies or experiments, summaries should include a brief summary of the goals or hypotheses of the study, a brief summary of the methods used, and a brief overview of the results. Your summary should also include any commentary on how well you think the data support the issue/topic you have chosen. For articles that are review pieces or personal commentaries, your summary should review the key points raised in support of and questioning your issue/topic. You should review the strength and depth of the evidence provided. Does the author have a particular agenda or stance on the issue? Were there any gaps in the logic or presentation? Were you convinced?

The purpose of this step is to help you use psychological databases to search for topics and to choose appropriate sources from mainstream developmental journals. Use psychological journals such as those listed on the course homepage as a starting point and seek others that may be appropriate for your topic. Avoid popular media and esoteric sources as references. Your outline and paper will have points deducted for poor references. Browse through the journals to find interesting articles that are comprehensible to you. Don't worry if you cannot understand the details of the statistical part of the article. Review the article carefully and organize your ideas before you start writing. You are expected to turn in detailed outlines with an original critique of an article.

Developmental Project Peer Review
10 points

Due Date:
Section 4 & 6: Wednesday, November 15
Section 11: Friday, November 17

The third step of your project is to obtain peer feedback on a draft of your paper. The purpose of this assignment is to share your ideas with a classmate so each student learns about another's project and to receive feedback to improve your final draft.

In class on November 15th or 17th you will be pairing up with another student to share your drafts with each other. You will have about 30-40 minutes to read over each other's draft and to fill out a comment sheet. I will be checking to make sure you have your drafts completed, and that you filled out a comment sheet on the paper you have read. When you turn in the final draft of your paper, you should attach the peer editing comments sheet that you received. This component of the assignment is worth 10 points.
