Short answer review questions

Two questions will be given from the following list in Exam 2. You will be asked to write a half-page answer in response to each question. Plan to spend 5 to 10 minutes writing on each question during the exam. Each short answer question will be worth 15 points. In addition, there will be 35 multiple choice questions (each worth 2 points).

1. According to lecture and the coursepack reading "Airline cockpit crew", a captain’s effectiveness is related to how well she establishes a "shell" at the group’s inception. List the four elements of the shell, briefly describe them, and give an example of a specific behavior related to each element.

2. According to Gersick’s research, what does the group do during Phase I of group development? Is this Phase a waste of time--why or why not?

3. Name and describe three techniques for reducing process losses. What is the main advantage and drawback of these strategies?

4. Describe 3 different intuitive decision making models from lecture, and discuss the key ways these models are different from one another.

5. Name the legs of the "three-legged stool" of intergroup conflict. Explain how each contributes to intergroup conflict in Sherif's Robber's Cave study.

6. Give examples of 3 different types of acculturation processes. Discuss how each affects diversity within a given culture.
