I am the GSI for Section 002 and Section 007.

Besides being a GSI for Psychology 360, I like to go hiking and be outside. I love Northern California (I was an undergrad at Stanford) and I miss the mountains. I worked in Silicon Valley before coming to graduate school, and I love keeping up on the latest gossip about high-tech companies.

Nothing should be negative, or trying to get away,

Brush strokes irresolute, words you did not mean.

You can do anything you want to do. What is rare

Is the actual wanting to do a specific thing.

Actually wanting to do a specific thing

I actually want to make this discussion section a great experience for you! That involves setting a few expectations up front: topics covered in section will correspond with topics in lecture, and will expand upon the ideas raised in the lecture and readings. We will do things in the section to make the lectures more real in your experience, to clarify the ideas, and to relate them to other ideas that you have encountered.

    Our Goals:

    • To understand, analyze, and discuss ideas presented in lecture and reading
    • To relate ideas from lecture to outside topics
    • To experience first-hand some ideas from the course

    Our Intellectual Standards:

    • We think through the ideas presented to us, whether we agree or disagree
    • Our ideas are supported by evidence, which we clearly state
    • Our evidence is clearly evaluated by ourselves and our peers
    • We further everyone’s knowledge by tackling tough questions honestly

    Our Discussion Standards:

    • We establish a community of ideas, where respect is naturally given
    • Listening is the first step in discussing. No interrupting or side conversations, please.
    • Everyone in the room communicates a viewpoint that contributes to the discussion.
    • People in the room hold a variety of opinions and beliefs that are different than yours. You job is to help each other express them. We learn from one another.

  • What about GRADES?

    Three items determine your grade.

    Exams (50%)
    1. There will be two exams given in class. The exams will contain multiple choice, true false, identification, and essay questions. The exams will cover material presented in lecture, readings, AND material presenting in discussion sections. Exam reviews will be held.
    2. Group Project (25%)

We will go over the requirements for the group project in detail in section. You MUST ATTEND SECTION SEPT. 30/OCT. 1 to join a group project. If you miss that section meeting, you cannot enroll in the class. We will spend lots of time focusing on group projects in section. LATE WORK: Work turned in between 24-48 hours after the deadline will be eligible for 50% credit. After 48 hours, no credit.

      Participation (25%)

  • Participation means being in class, prepared to do the work of the class. Attendance at sections is mandatory for high participation credit. Participation also includes being prepared and contributing. That means bringing your questions and thoughts to the discussion, and bringing them up for everyone to think about. If you’re shy or don’t usually speak up in class, use the course email list or come to office hours. This discussion section is about forming a community to tackle the ideas presented in the course—you must find ways to participate!

Hints to use the discussion section to your fullest benefit…

There are many ways to make discussion sections helpful and fun. This may be one of the few times in your life that you are challenged to think deeply about an issue and you also have the benefit of 30 other people thinking about it with you. I encourage you to take advantage of that opportunity. Use this discussion section to ask questions of clarification, to evaluate the evidence given for the arguments, and to advance your own understanding of the material. Most discussion sections will involve activities that require your active participation. The more you can get into the activities and use them to learn, the better the course will be for you.

You have the responsibility to prepare for section by doing the readings for class and attending the lectures. Write down your questions as you read, and bring them to section or come to office hours, or send email to the course list. If you’re having trouble with a reading, call or email me. The more clearly you understand the readings, the better you’ll do in the class.

Your final responsibility is to give the GSI active feedback about the class. If there is something that isn’t working, tell me. There will be chances during each class to discuss what goes well and what doesn’t. You can also send me email, come to office hours, or leave a note in my mailbox.

My responsibility as your GSI is to do whatever I can to help you understand the material and do well in the class. That means I will be prepared for good sections, give you adequate feedback, hold regular office hours, make special appointments to meet with you, answer questions promptly, and respond to all email within a reasonable time (48 hours max). Remember, it’s my job to help, so don’t be intimidated to seek me out.
