Sampling Issues

When do we care?
    - Surveys (descriptive studies)
    - Correlational studies (sometimes)

When do we typically not care?
    - Experiments

Random Sampling

* Every person in population has equal chance of selection
* Need complete list of population

Example:
drawing names out of a hat

Stratified Sampling

* When there are subgroups of interest

* Divide groups into strata (by gender, race, year in school, etc.)

* Then do random sampling among strata

Convenience Sampling

* What we often do in social psychology

* Choose the people that are around us (e.g., PSYC 111 students)

* Can't draw conclusions about the population

* Can test hypotheses and look at basic correlations
