Your assignment (should you choose to take it J ), is to come to class prepared with questions for Mr. Manuel. You should use the class readings in developing your questions. You may, however, use additional sources (e.g., current news from newspapers/magazines, sources from educational or social science journals, etc.). Further, your questions can be based on your personal experiences/perceptions as students here at U of M, as well as your precollege (e.g., high school) experiences/perceptions around athletics. You should be specific in your questions (i.e., do not ask "Is there equity across sports?" Instead, you might ask, "Are there equal resources - for instance, facilities and academic help - for male and female student-athletes here at the university?" Also, you should ask Mr. Manuel questions about how he, as a representative of the university athletic department, views particular issues, and, further, how the athletic department functions around these issues.

• athletics and admissions/standards policy

• Who benefits from athletics at U of M and in what ways? For instance, what benefits do student-athletes receive? How do these benefits correspond to what they provide to the university?
• Who does not benefit from athletics? How can college athletics be harmful?
• Are student-athletes exploited by the university, big business, and/or the larger public?
