SHORT PAPER #1

Aim:

The purpose of this assignment is to prompt you to consider and articulate your existing ideas about the topics of this course. Your task is to complete this assignment by reflecting on real-life experiences. These could be your own experiences, or the experiences of other people you know well. In other words, you should not do any reading before you write this paper!

Assignment:

Here's the question for you to ponder:

How does the female body influence personal and interpersonal experiences?

This is a broad question and you may approach it from any angle that seems most relevant to you. Mull the question over for a while and let your own ideas about it surface.

If no particular perspective comes to mind, you may want to consider the question from one of the following angles:

What is it like to be born and raised in a female body?
What is it like to grow old in a female body?
What is it like to be seen by others as a female body?
What is it like to build relationships with others in a female body?
How does having a female body influence personality?
How does having a female body influence mental health?
How does having a female body influence physical health?

Your responses should be typed, double-spaced, and spell-checked. Aim for about 3 pages (~750 words), but no more than 4 pages.

Grading:

Because I am interested in your own pre-existing views here, you will not be graded on the content of your answers. Rather, papers will be evaluated on their thoughtfulness, depth and clarity. I prefer to grade this paper anonymously; please do not put your name on your paper, but instead identify it with the last 6-digits of your Student ID number. This paper counts as 10% of your final course grade. It is due on January 13th, 1999.
