The UM REU Program is not open to application by UM undergraduate students.

March 14, 2008: The program is filled.

This program is conducted in concert with the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program and is supported by funds from the National Science Foundation. The UM REU Program especially welcomes applications from women and students from other populations underrepresented in the sciences.

REU Projects are available in all subject areas. Please see the Chemistry department website for general areas of faculty interests. Active programs in Materials Science and Bio-related areas are available. In addition to a research project, there will be other activities, including a field trip or two, meetings of the REU students, weekly group meetings, and a poster session.

IMPORTANT NOTICE! We have received additional spots in the REU program thanks to a generous gift from the Intel Corporation. Intel is interested in supporting students from underrepresented populations in the sciences who are interested in research projects in general areas of interest to Intel. These areas are Materials Science & Packaging (Profs Matzger, Chen, Banaszak Holl, Goodson), Nanotechnology & Device Physics (Profs Walter, Matzger, Banaszak Holl, Goodson), Non-Volatile Memory (Profs Banaszak Holl, Pecoraro), Computer Architecture & Statistical Computing (Profs Dunietz, Andricioaei, Geva, Walter, Carlson), Sensors & Microinstruments (Profs Zellers, Kopelman, Meyerhoff, Walter). Please indicate your interest in one of these Intel-REU spots in your application essay, which of these areas is appealing to you.

Notice to European students participating in the NSF/ACS/DAAD/ECTN program: We are excited to welcome your application to spend the summer in Ann Arbor. Please indicate your interest in the University of Michigan's REU program to host your visit to the US when you apply through the ACS site: ACS/DAAD/ECTN International REU SIte.

All REU Fellowship include: $4000 stipend, and travel. All students receive internet access to their existing home university/college e-mail account.

For questions, contact Prof. Brian P. Coppola, Program Director: bcoppola@umich.edu

Selection of participants:

  1. Offers are being made via e-mail only.
  2. Only the selected and accepted applicants will be announced in the space below.
  3. Because of the large number of applications we receive, we do not contact applicants who have not been accepted to the program.
  4. We use a rolling acceptance, and make offers to a greater number of students than we have spots for because many students have applied to multiple schools. Under no circumstance should you accept an offer from an REU program unless you are committed to that program. When you say 'yes' to a position in a professional setting, you should mean it.
  5. In general, you have a week or two to make up your mind. By all means, you should contact other programs to which you have applied with this offer, if you have decided there are programs whose offer you will take over ours.

Thanks for your interest in the UM-REU program (Because of budget issues at NSF, the renewed sites were limited to 8 spots, a reduction from 10). We have constructed some additional positions from other sources of funding.
