University of Michigan Risk Management

Note: Insurance coverage is not automatic. Risk Management Services must be notified when vehicles are obtained. For vehicles leased through Parking and Transportation Services, coverage is automatic.

The use of 15 passenger vans is prohibited.

Auto Liability

Automobile Liability is provided for all University vehicles and authorized drivers. This self-insurance program pays all amounts that the University is legally obligated to pay for claims of negligence which result in damage to property of others or bodily injury to third parties within the limits of applicable law.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) applies to accidental bodily injury sustained while in a University vehicle or from an injury arising out of the operation, use or maintenance of the vehicle. These benefits are coordinated with Workers'Compensation benefits or other wage continuation benefits which may be paid by the University. PIP benefits provide for the following: reasonably necessary products, services and accommodations for an injured person's care, recovery or rehabilitation; and wage loss benefits.

Physical Damage

Provides for physical damage (collision or comprehensive) to University vehicles. Coverage for University vehicles is automatic unless otherwise requested.

Collision: Collision coverage pays for the repair of replacement with like kind and quality. A deductible will be charged to the department if the driver of the University vehicle is at fault in a collision accident.

Comprehensive: Comprehensive coverage pays for the repair or replacement with like kind and quality for physical damage other than collision.

Vehicle Rental/Loan

Contact the Travel Office for current recommendations regarding preferred rental agencies or credit card companies. Compliance with these recommendations is encouraged as it may provide coverage for collision and auto liability.

Personal Vehicles

Coverage does not extend to personal vehicles. The cost for personal auto insurance is factored into the mileage reimbursement rate.

Certificates of Insurance/Registration

Certificates of Insurance/Registration can be obtained from Risk Management Services. Vehicle registration is arranged for through Parking and Transportation Services.

Reporting Vehicle Accidents and Submitting a Claim

All accidents on campus must be reported to the Department of Public Safety, Hospital Security or the Campus Safety Office (Dearborn and Flint). If there is personal injury, Risk Management Services must be contacted immediately.

All accidents off campus must be reported to the local law enforcement agency. If there is personal injury, Risk Management Services must be contacted immediately.

A Driver's Report of Vehicle Damage form (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in) must be completed and forwarded to Parking and Transportation Services or Risk Management Services.

If a non-University vehicle is involved in a collision, the Verification of Insurance Coverage of Non-University Driver form (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in) should be completed and forwarded to the Risk Management Services.

All other documentation (estimates, police reports, etc.) must be forwarded to Risk Management Services.

Repairs to vehicles may be completed by Parking and Transportation Services. If this is not feasible, two estimates of repair must be provided to the Risk Management Services prior to authorization for repair.

 

Safety Tips

Make sure that you are familiar with the operation of the vehicle, including lights, seat adjustment and windshield wipers.

Ensure that proper equipment is available including windshield wiper solvent, ice scrapers, etc.

Check to be sure that proper documentation, including driver's license, proof of insurance/registration and reporting forms for accidents are in the vehicle.

Adjust mirrors properly to provide maximum view of the road.
