FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

Am I covered?

You are insured for claims made against you for any loss or damage resulting from your University sponsored activities, except for any loss or damage resulting from any willful misconduct or illegal activities.

What costs are covered?

Coverage provides for payment of all costs, including defense costs, for which the University and covered persons become legally obligated to pay because of personal injury or damage to property of others arising out of the operations of the University.

What must I do to obtain coverage?

Persons covered by the University's insurance program must receive approval of indemnification from the Provost or Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (refer to Defense and Indemnification SPG 601.09: www.spg.umich.edu.) In addition, those covered are required to cooperate fully in all aspects of the defense of the claim.

Are Volunteers Covered?

The University's insurance provides liability coverage for volunteers while performing authorized services on behalf of the University. Insurance for injuries sustained while in the course of these services is not provided.

Is personal property covered?

Generally speaking, the University's coverage does not extend to personal property. Some exceptions apply if property is being used at the request of, or to benefit, the University. Call Risk Management Services for more information.

Do I need to purchase insurance to cover property in transit?

No, the University's property insurance program covers University owned property in transit.

Do I need to obtain the collision damage waiver insurance when renting a vehicle?

No, you should:

1. Use the University's designated car rental company. If that is not an option;

2. Use the University PCard to rent the vehicle. If that is not an option;

3. The University's self-insurance program will respond to a loss.

Does the University's auto insurance program respond to loss or damage involving a personal vehicle driven for University business?

The owner of the vehicle's insurance responds to the loss or damage. The mileage reimbursement rate includes an insurance reimbursement.

Should all contracts be sent to Risk Management Services for review?

Typically Risk Management Services reviews contracts received from the Office of General Counsel or Purchasing.

Are insurance premiums recharged to University Departments?

Yes, but not every department will be recharged. For example, recharges to departments within the General Fund-Ann Arbor charged to one chartfield combination. Flint, Dearborn and the Hospital receive one recharge for all the units within each.
