Where do Michigan Rowing Summer Campers Come From? In 2007, we had 8 "locals" from Ann Arbor and 12 more from throughout the state of Michigan. 8 campers came from throughout the state of California, 8 from different parts of Ohio and 5 from Maryland. Other campers also came individually or in small groups from Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Virginia. Most campers did not know anyone else at camp before they arrived, and it was easy to make friends quickly among the group. In 2008, we had at least one camper registered from each of these states: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia -- and two campers who flew in from London, England! |

Lodging in Michigan's West Quad Campers residing at the University of Michigan for Rowing Camp will stay at the university's West Quadrangle, or "West Quad." The University of Michigan's Housing Division reserves West Quad for all of the Athletic Department's summer camps, the Summer Camps of Champions. For more information about Summer Camp housing, take a look at the University Housing website dedicated to Michigan's Summer Camps of Champions and their brochure for the 2009 University of Michigan Summer Camps. To check out West Quad, you may want to look at the University Housing website designed for Michigan undergraduates which features the residence hall. Rooms are doubles and are assigned based on age and roommate requests. Housing Services often is able to honor the requests we receive in advance, but the best way to ensure that a roommate request is honored is to show up together at registration. Resident campers are under constant supervision of resident staff while in the West Quad Residence Hall, and boys and girls are housed on separate floors and in different wings of West Quad. Once campers return to West Quad after their last rowing activity each evening, they are not permitted to leave the dormitory without a dorm counselor or parent/guardian until morning. Dormitory counselors conduct a bed check every evening, typically at 11:00 pm. Please note that space in West Quad is limited. Register early to guarantee University Housing. |

Activities and Counselors in the Dorms: The University of Michigan's Housing Department has a specific program for all of the Athletic Department's summer camps, the Summer Camps of Champions. We're sure some campers will return to their dorm rooms at the end of the day, shower, and go to sleep -- but for those who still have some energy, dormitory counselors make available card and board games; sometimes counselors will walk small groups of campers to a local ice cream story or eatery for a snack; and occasionally campers will order in a pizza between the evening camp session and bedtime. Once campers return with Michigan Rowing Summer Camp counselors to the dormitory for the evening, they are not permitted to leave again until breakfast unless they are accompanied by a Housing counselor or parent/guardian. Housing counselors also conduct bed checks every evening at approximately 11:00 pm to be sure everyone is exactly where they are supposed to be! |

Meals in the West Quad Dining Hall All residential and commuter campers are provided lunch and dinner on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday by the University Housing's Summer Camps of Champions at the West Quad Dormitory and lunch on Thursday by Michigan Rowing Summer Camp at the Boathouse. Residential campers also are provided breakfast each morning from Monday to Thursday. Attendance at all provided meals is mandatory -- no sleeping through breakfast! Housing only offers dinner from 5:00 - 6:00 pm for all athletic camps; since many camps have evening sessions after dinner, residential campers may want to have snacks in their rooms for that period between the end of the evening session and bed time. Residential campers may also want to bring a small amount of spending money in case they want to have pizza delivered during that time, or walk a block or two with a Housing counselor for ice cream or another evening snack. Commuter campers have the option of purchasing breakfast tickets at camp check-in.

What is the weather like in Ann Arbor in late July? Usually, it's beautiful! That was the case in 2008. In 2007, the week before camp a cool front moved in, which provided us with temperatures in the 70s during the day and into the high 50s or low 60s in the evening. But then a heat wave descended for the week of camp, and temperatures during the day did climb into the low 90s. We recommend that you bring a sweatshirt and/or light jacket for morning rows in case it's cool out, and a portable fan for your dormitory room in case it's hot. A limited number of fans may be available for campers who are flying rather than driving to Ann Arbor (hard to bring a portable fan on the plane!). |

Rowing Exhibition for Parents, Guardians, and Friends Parents, guardians, and friends are invited to observe a rowing exhibition on Belleville Lake, the site of Michigan Rowing's boathouse and the place where campers will row while they are at camp. The exhibition will take place in the morning on the last day of camp, Thursday, July 30th. Details and directions to the Rowing Exhibition at Belleville Lake will be posted this spring. A light lunch will provided for campers and their families at the Boathouse. |

The Coach-to-Camper Ratio at Michigan Rowing Summer Camp is very important to us. Every boat has its own coach on the water. Not only is there a one-coach-per-boat ratio, but Michigan Rowing Summer Camp counselors (typically current Michigan Rowers) accompany campers to all activities, including meals; housing counselors live on every floor in the dormitory; and our MRSC athletic trainer is with campers all of the time (she moves into the dorm during the week of camp) to handle medical issues. |

Things to Bring to Michigan Rowing Summer Camp Bring rowing clothes, running shoes, pants and shirts, socks and underclothes, t-shirts and/or tank tops, pajamas and a robe, a hat, and waterproof shoes (such as flip-flops); an alarm clock, pillow, sleeping bag or sheets and a blanket, washcloths and towels, and toiletries (especially sunscreen!); a fan (residence halls are not air conditioned); a water bottle; spending money; and optional items such as a camera and hairdryer. A more detailed checklist of items to bring will be posted on our website in the spring. |

| A Dress Code? Yes, in the Michigan Athletic Department's Weight Rooms! Campers will attend a very popular demonstration about strength training specifically targeted to rowers, based on the strength and conditioning program of student-athletes who row for the University of Michigan. Please be sure that campers have at least one pair of shorts and one t-shirt that are either blue, maize, gray, or white and that do not have the name of any other school or university on them. | ||||
| Transportation to the University of Michigan If you will be flying to Michigan for the Summer Rowing Camp, plan to fly into Detroit's Metro Airport (DTW), an international airport that is about 25 minutes from Ann Arbor. Please contact us by emailing <rowing.camp@umich.edu> if you have questions about getting from the airport to the University of Michigan (for example, by car service, shuttle, or cab). We will post a map, including driving directions, to South Quad, the site of Sunday's camp check-in, this spring. |
Especially for Commuter Campers: Once you arrive at camp, you'll travel with residential campers to all activities -- so you won't need transportation at all once you arrive in the morning (probably at around 8:00 am -- we'll confirm times in May) until you leave at around 8:30 pm (again, time to be confirmed in May). And FYI, parking is very difficult near South Quad where you will meet us each day, so we recommend that you avoid driving yourself and having to find parking for the day. |

| Medical Issues University of Michigan Athletic Department trainers will be on site to give attention to minor ailments, and the University of Michigan Hospital will be used for more serious injuries. Parent insurance will serve as primary insurance for campers; camp insurance is secondary coverage. |

| Rules and Regulations All campers are required to comply with the rules and regulations of the University of Michigan, Michigan Rowing Summer Camp 2009, and University Housing (available on our camp registration page). Any violation of the rules, including the use of cigarettes or alcohol as well as general misconduct, constitute grounds for immediate dismissal from camp without refund or credit. |
