Living in Ann Arbor

Want to live in a place that the New York Times listed as #5 on the "Best Places to Live" list? On May 6, 2007, the New York Times called Ann Arbor the fifth best place to live in the United States--and we wonder whether they underestimated just a bit.

Or how about living in a city that Bicycling magazine voted one of the Top 20 Bike Towns in the United States, #3 in the Best Cycling City category.

How about living in a city that regularly draws musical acts such as Norah Jones, Ben Folds, the Barenaked Ladies (for free, even!), Guster, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, K.D. Lang, Bonnie Raitt, the Indigo Girls, Keb Mo', and many others, at venues walking distance from Michigan dorms.

Then there's the food: Food and Wine magazine named Ann Arbor's Zingerman's Deli as one of the 25 best food markets in the world--Zingerman's was one of only two U.S. restaurants on the list (check out the May 2007 New York Times article on Zingerman's). Within walking distance of campus: sushi, Mexican, Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, Italian, Jamaican, vegetarian . . . and, of course, pizza. Nearby, a flagshop Whole Foods Market, a Trader Joe's, a fabulous year-round Farmers' Market.

The bookstores: Ann Arbor ranks first in the number of booksellers and books sold per capita, according to Wikipedia.

The parks: 147 city parks! Including canoe liveries, botanical gardens, arboretums, and observatories.

Movies? One of the best independent movie theaters between New York and Los Angeles, the historic Michigan Theater, a three-minute walk from campus. Plus the usual multiplex commercial theaters that you'd find in lots of places.

And let's not forget things such as a very large indoor climbing wall at Planet Rock.

Sure, there's the local mall with everything from Macy's to Abercrombie. But wait until you check out all of the locally owned stores downtown (in other words, you can walk there from campus): outdoor stores, clothing stores, craft stores, art galleries, so much more.

And we haven't even begun to tell you about everything offered at the University of Michigan, or in neighboring towns. Welcome to Ann Arbor!
