Resources for Athletes
The University of Michigan is known in part for the fabulous resources available to its student-athletes. In addition to the terrific resources each and every Michigan undergraduate would expect at a world-class, highly ranked university, Michigan student-athletes have access to their own resources for academics and athletics. Here are some of the many resources available to Wolverine Rowers. |
Academic Center |
The University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross Academic Center, completed in 2006, is the academic home for Michigan student-athletes. It houses classrooms, computer labs, tutoring space, individual and group study space, and offices for the instructional support staff who regularly work with our student-athletes. |
Academic Success Program |
The Academic Success Program includes academic counseling and planning, study tables with organized tutoring, free individual tutoring in any subject, alternative testing arrangements as athletic travel deems necessary, preferred course registration dates for student-athletes, and some of the best attention and aid in the country for students with learning disabilities. Every athletic team at Michigan has its own Academic Counselor, and the team's academic counselor meets individually with each athlete to help her develop a plan that best supports her in successfully managing her academic pursuits and reaching her academic goals. The Academic Counselor for Michigan Rowing is Dave Ondercin. |
Academic Tutors |
The Athletic Department makes tutors available to all of its student-athletes. Tutors are available for all subjects. Especially convenient for Wolverine Rowers is that Dave Ondercin, the Academic Counselor who works with the rowing team, coordinates the Athletic Department's tutorial program. |
Athletic Medicine |
The Athletic Medicine Department delivers the highest quality health care to Michigan's student-athletes. Five physicians and thirteen trainers are available to diagnose and treat everything from a stuffy nose to an athletic injury. Physicians, trainers, and their support staff work out of thirteen training rooms, including a satellite facility at the Michigan Rowing Boathouse. |
Athletic Trainers |
In addition to five physicians and support staff, Michigan's Athletic Medicine Department includes thirteen trainers. Trainers work closely with athletes to prevent and also to rehabilitate injuries. The trainer with whom Michigan Rowers work most frequently, Lisa Hass, not only is the Staff Athletic Trainer for Women's Rowing at the University of Michigan, but in the summer Lisa also travels with the United States National Team as the U.S. National Team Trainer for Rowing -- this summer (2007), traveling with the U.S. National Team to the Pan American Games and to the World Championships in Munich. |
Career Development |
Whether rowers compete, coach, or work in non-rowing careers after they graduate, they are welcome to use not only the University's career placement services, but also Michigan's Athletic Department career development resources. Summer internships and job opportunities after graduation for Michigan student-athletes are two of the primary goals of the Athletic Department's Career Development Program. Resources available to Wolverine student-athletes through the Athletic Department's CDP include resumé workshops, alumni networking, email updates for job fairs and internship postings, and cooperative programs that allow for mock interviews and employment workshops on campus. |
Competition and Training Facilities |
The competition and training facilities for Wolverines, including the facilities specifically for Michigan Rowing, are everything you would expect at a university with athletic traditions as rich and expectations for success as high as they are at the University of Michigan. Welcome to Big Ten Athletics. |
Laundry Service |
The Athletic Department provides laundry service for all issued gear (except of course hats, sunglasses, jackets, and suitcases!), including unisuits, sports bras, shorts, tee shirts, polos, sweatshirts, sweatpants, mock turtles, and other workout gear. |
Nutritionist |
The Athletic Medicine Department includes a full-time nutritionist, Caroline Mandel. Caroline works with Michigan student-athletes on the dietary transition to college, attending to health, performance, training, recovery, and injury rehabilitation. Michigan Rowers, including coxswains, also often consult with Caroline about nutrition as they move between different training and competition phases throughout their collegiate rowing careers. |
Priority Course Registration |
Student-athletes at Michigan are eligible for priority course registration every semester. |
Sports Psychologists |
Two sports psychologists, Greg Harden and Barbara Hansen, work with Wolverine athletes on challenges that include homesickness, competition anxiety, loss, life changes, and injuries as well as challenges including depression and eating disorders. Greg and Barb are readily available and accessible to Michigan's student-athletes and work exclusively with student-athletes at Michigan, so they have significant experience tailored to the specific needs of collegiate athletes. |
Strength Coaches |
Quite simply, Michigan's strength coaches work daily with some of the best athletes in the world -- student-athletes who will become professional athletes, student-athletes who will or who already have won Olympic medals -- in four state-of-the-art weight training rooms. Strength coaches at Michigan work closely with each of the teams at Michigan, establishing training programs with team coaches that are designed to maximize performance in each sport. Strength coaches including Michigan Rowing's primary strength coach Molli Munz also work with individual athletes to ensure productive and safe strength training throughout an athlete's training and competition cycles. |
