The Second Division of Student Affairs Research Fair

The Division of Student Affairs has a great amount of expertise about our students. Some of our staff members conduct studies or synthesize existing research. Some staff members are practitioners with extensive knowledge from interaction with students. Other knowledgeable Division members are partners with the Division (faculty, community members, others) who work with the Division to create a holistic learning experience for students. Students themselves (undergraduate and graduate) are both the focus of this attention and also an additional source of expertise about students.

On 2 June 2005, we will have our Second Division of Student Affairs Research Fair, demonstrating how these various ways of learning about our students work together on current student issues. This will allow much of the great Divisional work in student learning, research, outcomes assessment, and forward strategic planning to converge and enliven the whole fabric of the Division of Student Affairs. The array of topics and issues addressed in the Division is vast, including:

• Millennial students (the changes in them, as well as their parents),
• Spiritual and ethical development of students,
• Life skill development,
• Community building,
• Students and today’s economy (focusing on current challenges as well as future issues for today’s students).

Our Goal Outcomes Assessment Fair in June 2004 was a great success. It attracted over 50 people to an afternoon of discussion and networking around Division goal assessment. This fair met intended goals in level of participation and in reported satisfaction by attendees. The networking and implementation of new ideas continues to expand months later, and will greatly inform Divisional goal work in the coming months.

Building on the success of the Research Roundtable fair in June 2004, this annual fair focuses on current student related research. The intended target participants is a broad and varied collection: Faculty, students, Divisional staff, community leaders, and the media.
