Faculty Governance Update to the Regents

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
REGENTS COMMUNICATION

June 1999

On June 21, 1999, SACUA will meet for a day-long Retreat to  identify and prioritize topics of major concern and goals for the upcoming academic year.  SACUA will also include President Bollinger and Provost Cantor for a portion of the Retreat to discuss and refine SACUA’s interaction with their offices.  SACUA's current issues include:

A.  Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics - SACUA will continue discussions involving the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics including the issue of expanding the number of faculty on the Board.

B.  Tobacco Divestment - SACUA remains committed to the concept of University divestment from tobacco-related investments.  Along with Senate Assembly's Financial Affairs Advisory Committee, SACUA supports and will offer assistance to the Regents' tobacco divestment committee.  SACUA will further consider holding a symposium to allow the presentation of various and opposing points of view concerning the tobacco divestment issue.

C.  CESF Compensation Guidelines - SACUA desires to ensure the recent work of the Committee on the Economic Status of the Faculty (CESF) continues through the establishment of a joint faculty/administration committee charged to facilitate adoption of the faculty compensation guidelines.

D.  Life Sciences - SACUA commends President Bollinger, Provost Cantor, and EVPMA Omenn for their foresight and leadership in establishing the life sciences initiative.  Similarly, SACUA is prepared to assist the administration in its continuing efforts to create the Life Sciences Institute and integrate it into the University structure and curriculum.

E.  Intellectual Property and Faculty Consulting Policies - SACUA will participate in the formulation of changes in the Intellectual Property Policy and will educate and inform faculty about the new policy.

SACUA Minutes and Senate Assembly Minutes are available online.
