THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
REGENTS COMMUNICATION
July 2001
After the annual planning retreat held in May, SACUA identified those topics it expects faculty governance groups will address in the 2001-02 academic year. Those topics are as follows:
Prescription Drug 2002 Benefit Changes
Conflict of Commitment Policy
Grievance Procedures
Intercollegiate Athletics
Faculty Composition
Grade Alteration Policies
Teaching Principles
Faculty Misconduct Procedures
Tenure Guidelines
Electronic Privacy
Many of these topics will be assigned to several Senate Assembly standing committees for review and some will be a part of continual, ongoing discussions in many years ahead. However, SACUA did identify five topics of immediate concern that will form the basis of Senate Assembly meetings this year. Those topics are: 1) Prescription Drug 2002 benefit changes, 2) adoption of a teaching principles document, 3) the University-wide conflict of commitment policy clarification, 4) the faculty role in the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics, and 5) the growth in non-tenure track faculty composition.
Furthermore, SACUA anticipates that it could become involved, at some level, this year in issues that may arise from the affirmative action lawsuits, developments in the Life Sciences Initiative, tuition hikes caused by the state appropriation, and energy cost increases.
