A. KEY ISSUES
Over the summer months, SACUA was able to identify the following key issues it feels are of primary importance for central faculty governance in the 1999-2000 academic year:
1. Faculty Compensation - The focus of the faculty compensation issue for this year will be the formation and work of a joint faculty/administration advisory committee as proposed by Provost Cantor. The committee will form guidelines for faculty compensation giving careful attention to the guidelines prepared earlier by the Committee on the Economic Status of the Faculty (CESF).
2. Intellectual Property Rights - The Regents' intellectual property rights policy is currently under revision. Faculty expect to participate in the formulation of the new policy through the use of two Senate Assembly subcommittees, the Research Policies Committee and the General Counsel Advisory Committee.
3. Joint Appointments - The use of joint appointments has brought with it a series of difficulties that need to be addressed. The Provost's advisory committee, the Academic Affairs Advisory committee, will review this issue this year.
4. Tenure/Non-Tenure Track Positions - Discussion about the many facets of concern around the increase of non-tenure track positions at the university will continue this year. An aspect likely to be discussed will be the question of where does tenure reside? Do faculty hold tenure with their unit or the University?
5. Tobacco Divestment - SACUA continues to support the idea of University divestment of tobacco related investments and, on that basis, desires to see the Regents' advisory committee formed soon.
6. Electronic Privacy - At the suggestion of President Bollinger, SACUA will review current policies and hold discussions with the President about electronic privacy protection.
B. EVENTS
On September 1, SACUA participated in the New Faculty Orientation. SACUA will hold its annual Committee Day orientation on October 7 with the President and Provost. Finally, on October 4, President Bollinger will address Senate Assembly and Provost Cantor will address Senate Assembly on October 25.
