Faculty Governance Update to the Regents

PAST ACTIVITIES:

On September 26, Senate Assembly held its first meeting of the 2005-06 academic year.  President Mary Sue Coleman gave her address entitled, "University Accomplishments and Challenges."  SACUA/Senate Assembly Chair Bruno Giordani gave a brief overview of the history of shared governance at the University and discussed the importance of the collaboration between the faculty and administration in moving forward with the mission of the University.  Professors Keith Riles and SeonAe Yeo and Dr. Donald Winsor were presented with the inaugural SACUA faculty governance special recognition awards.   The conflict of interest/commitment policy revisions and flexible tenure clock recommendations were presented to the Assembly.

On September 27, Senate Assembly held its annual "Committee Day Luncheon" to provide the initial meeting opportunity for its committees.  President Coleman, Interim Provost Ned Gramlich, and SACUA/Senate Assembly Chair Bruno Giordani spoke at the event.

On October 6, Floyd Abrams, William J. Brennan, Jr. Visiting Professor of First Amendment Law and Partner, Cahill Gordon & Reindel, gave the 15th Annual University of Michigan Senate's Davis, Markert, Nickerson Lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

On October 31, Senate Assembly will hold its second meeting of the year.  General Counsel Marvin Krislov and Associate Provost James Hilton will be guests to provide background information and answer questions about the conflict of interest/commitment policy revisions.

On November 21, Senate Assembly will hold its third meeting.  Rackham Dean Janet Weiss and LSA Dean Terrence McDonald, co-authors of the flexible tenure clock report, will address Senate Assembly on the report's recommendations.
