Faculty Governance Update to the Regents

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
REGENTS COMMUNICATION

December 2000

SACUA and Senate Assembly are pleased to report that, after many years of cooperative work between Provost Cantor and the Committee on the Economic Status of the Faculty (CESF), the Deans voted unanimously to accept all four recommendations contained in the report of the Provost's Faculty Compensations Guidelines Study Committee. The recommendations approved are the following:

1. The Provost will arrange a conference of deans to share knowledge and best practices and otherwise make technical consultation available to all units. Deans and chairs should be encouraged to initiate review of their units' procedures and mechanisms, paying particular attention to the CESF guidelines of increasing non-discrimination, openness, consistency, peer review, communication, and accountability of compensation.

2. The Provost should ask each Dean to develop a system for periodic review (every 3-5 years) of the effectiveness of the school or college's compensation scheme.

3. Deans and decision-makers should be encouraged to examine their communication with individual faculty members and the unit as a whole regarding the quality, adequacy, and usefulness of information on relative performance and relative compensation.

4. Central administration should study and consult with units on alternative methods of reporting the annual salary program.

SACUA is also pleased to report its involvement in the creation of a Presidential committee to address intellectual property issues, including conflict of commitment, as well as its involvement in recommending faculty members to serve on the committee.

Finally, at its December 11 meeting, Senate Assembly will host General Counsel Marvin Krislov and Deputy Counsel Liz Barry who will provide an update on the affirmative action lawsuits. The December 11 meeting will be broadcast live on the University's Channel 22 and video taped for future rebroadcast.

SACUA Minutes and Senate Assembly Minutes are available on line.
