Faculty Governance Update to the Regents

THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
REGENTS COMMUNICATION

December 1999

A. RECENT ACTIVITIES

1. November 22 Senate Assembly

Vice-President and General Counsel Marvin Krislov presented an address to Senate Assembly in which he discussed the issues of 1) commercial on-line note taking, 2) electronic privacy, and 3) a recent Michigan Supreme Court case interpreting the state's Open Meetings Act. Senate Assembly also made changes to the current process for the evaluation of Deans. The most notable change was to schedule evaluations of Deans to take place during the third year of a Dean's term rather than every two years.

2. On November 29, the Regents' tobacco divestment advisory committee held a forum to assess University sentiment of the divestment of University held tobacco stocks. Specifically, the committee asked the audience whether "holding tobacco stock investments is counter to the core mission of the University".

B. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

1. Intellectual Property Rights

SACUA continues to discuss with numerous members of the administration the changing intellectual property rights of faculty. Of most recent interest is the Media Rights Task Force report as well as the proposed changes to the Regentally adopted University policy on intellectual property rights.

2. Clinical Faculty Bylaw Changes

The Provost's office is in the process of obtaining input and reaction to several proposed Bylaw changes pertaining to Clinical Faculty and Research Scientists. SACUA and Senate Assembly have been included by the Provost in this process at a very early stage.

SACUA Minutes and Senate Assembly Minutes are available online.
