Laura's birth knocked her father from first to third place in a Snipe regatta during the June of 1988. After long summer days with her older brother and sister in a (cramped)Sunfish on their 'lake', she inherited the somewhat coveted position of crew for her father on the very same (and now antique) Snipe. On the few days of wind during West Michigan summers, Laura repaid her father many times over for the points she took from him in '88.

As Governor Scott Pfeffer and his twelve-year-old daughter, Kelsey Dubois, sail to Baseline Lake, Michigan, their vessel,HMS Wolverine encounters a shipwreck with a sole survivor, the young Alex Bogatko, floating among the wreckage. Kelsey finds and hides a gold medallion she found around the unconscious Alex's neck, fearing he could be accused of piracy. She then glimpses a ghostly pirate ship,(the Black Diamond), disappearing into the mist. That night, Baseline Lake is besieged by the Black Diamond, answering the medallion's mysterious call. Kelsey is captured and invokes parley. To protect her identity, Kelsey tells the evil Captain Bruce her surname is "Baker". She negotiates for the pirates to cease the attack on Baseline Lake in exchange for the medallion. Bruce agrees but, employing a loophole in their agreement, keeps Kelsey prisoner, believing she is the key to breaking an ancient curse they are under. When Commodore Morris refuses to take immediate action, Alex persuades Captain Jack Bauer to help him rescue her in exchange for freeing him from jail. They set sail for Isla de Grosse Ile, a mysterious island Jack knows the pirates will go to in order to break the curse. Alex valiantly kills Bruce Martin, Jack Bauer tragically dies in a climbing accident, and Kelsey declares her everlasting love for Alex.

Mike Texter
Mike Texter

Mike Texter has been a member of the Michigan sailing team since spring of 2008. He grew up sailing casually with his family on northern Lake Michigan and around the Grand Rapids area in West Michigan. He started racing on big boats the summer after his senior year of high school. He also did a chicago-Mackinaw race and thought it was amazing. During the Summer of 2008 he was given the opportunity to race on his grandpa's Mumm 30, "Surprise". On a side note, his real sport is soccer, but he wasn't good enough to make the club team so he had to settle for sailing. He likes it though since the people on the sailing team are cool.

Amanda Baker grew up on the lovely island of Grosse Ile. She learned to sail at the age of 8 and stopped improving at the age of 10. Although a terrible crew, she often can be seen in this postition sailing with her sister Christina. One can only assume that their parents pay Christina to sail with her, or she has taken pity on her. She also skippers and sails laser from time to time.

Freshmen

Lauren Beriont

Lauren Beriont '13

Lauren, contrary to most of the team, grew up sailing on the East Coast. She learned to sail at SCYC in New Jersey at age 8 and currently coaches during the summers at the local yacht club. She skippered most of her life but recently enjoys the role of crew. She is in love with the ocean to the extent where she feels obligated jumping into it every time she sees it. Lauren will undoubtedly end up living near water. She is excited to be a part of the Michigan Sailing Family.
