Welcome to Student Activities and Leadership's Diag reservation site. The Diag is an excellent venue to promote your student organization, fundraise for non-profits, and advertise for upcoming events due to its location and high traffic flow. Several policies exist that guide the usage of the Diag. Our hope is that this guide will assist you and your student organization's or department's Diag scheduling efforts.
If you should have questions, feel free to email the office at diag.info@umich.edu or call, 734-763-5900.
DID YOU KNOW? Last year, there were 423 scheduled events on the Diag.
Several factors must be met in order to have your Diag Space Application approved:
- Be a recognized student organization, or an affiliated University department
- Diag date availability; it is available on a first-come first-serve basis
- Be an authorized signer for the organization or department
- Complete a Diag Space Application
- Submit all supporting documents, including event description and details, event diagram, noise exemption, certificate of insurance, and/or fundraising letter of intent
- Review event details in-person with a SAL staff member
- Fund availability in your student organization SOAS account to cover estimated costs of ordered services

There are several types of events that are commonly held on the Diag:
- Information Table
- Noon-time Rally
- Bucket Drive Fundraiser
- Candlelight Vigil
- Promotional Event with Inflatable Novelty Game
The compiled list of events represents the majority of Diag events. To insure that your event is approved, you will need to speak with a staff member and discuss event specifics. While no fees are associated with reserving space on the Diag, student organizations and departments will acquire charges for ordered services (e.g., electricity, amplified sound, garbage clean-up).
Events on the Diag are limited to one amplified sound event, one bucket drive (fundraiser), and up-to-three separately permitted, information tables per day. Changes to these limitations may be made due to space requirements of proposed events.
DID YOU KNOW? Events organized by student organizations represent 88% of the total activity on the Diag. The remaining activity is organized by University offices and departments

Events on the Diag may be subject to costs associated with charged services. Costs for Diag services are as listed estimates and are subject to change depending on current labor and overtime charges.

Once approved by email, student organizations and departments will need to obtain the permit, which will be available at the Office of Student Activities & Leadership. It is important to have the permit on-hand during the authorized event. All authorized events will need a permit; failure to comply may result in a suspension of Diag privileges, as well as, a notification of unauthorized activity to the Department of Public Safety.
Individuals may distribute pamphlets, flyers, and other promotional material without obtaining a permit. Such activity is allowed, as long as no equipment, tables, or chairs are required on the Diag and such activity does not interfere with authorized events, impede traffic flow, or violate other University policies.

Diag events with activities that violate University policy, raise concern for the health, safety, and wellness of Diag users, and/or impede pedestrian traffic flow are not permissible. The Office of Student Activities & Leadership, in conjunction with Department of Public Safety, has interpreted the policies to prohibit:
- events that include sales, solicitation, and/or "donations" for goods or services
- events in which another venue is more appropriate
- vehicles or boats on the Diag
- events with more than one inflatable novelty game
- events that include the grassy area outside of the bricked Diag area
- events with tents, and/or three dimensional structures taller than eight feet
- events not complying with other Diag policies
Diag access is reserved for student organizations, as well as, departments, units, and affiliated offices of the University of Michigan. Users of the Diag are not allowed to obtain information from pedestrians to give to a third party, such activity would violate the solicitation policy.
- Groups are able to request space up to 3 consectutive days a week
- The Diag must be scheduled at least 3 business days prior to the proposed event
- NOTE: The more complex your event, the more lead time you need to leave.
- The Diag may be scheduled up to six months in advance
- Amplified sound is allowed on the Diag between 12-1pm. A noise exemption must be obtained for use of amplified sound outside of this hour.
DID YOU KNOW? Last year events on the Diag: 51% were Information Tables, 27% were large Events/Rallies, and 22% were Fundraisers.

The most common exemption on the Diag is a noise exemption. Exemptions to Diag policies may be submitted to the Office of Student Activities & Leadership and will be decided by the Associate Vice President for Facilities and Operations, such exemptions should be made 30 days prior to the proposed event. Exemptions received fewer than 10 days prior to an event may be denied due to lack of adequate planning.
DID YOU KNOW? 88 student organizations conducted their fundraising efforts on the Diag.

Policy for Scheduled Use of the University of Michigan Designated Outdoor Common Areas
Diag usage is intended to be consistent with the University's policy on "Freedom of Speech and Artistic Expression" (Standard Practice Guide 601.1), including the following principle: Expression of diverse points of view is of the highest importance, not only for those who espouse a cause or position and then defend it, but also for those who hear and pass judgment on that defense.

If the Diag is unavailable, there are plenty of venues on campus to host a student organization event. Here is a list of possible venue ideas to consider:
