SAPAC’s professional staff and volunteers believe that the media has a strong influence on the public’s perceptions of sexuality and sexual violence. The NPA movie screening event provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to view popular movies free of charge and then discuss the film in terms of its portrayal of sexual violence.

By examining the use of sexual violence in popular film, SAPAC volunteers hope to raise awareness and consciousness about the gravity of the problem. In addition, films based on real events provide an additional educational value, since the group can discuss the historical event that the film portrays. For example, in 2006 the NPAs screened North Country, a film concerning the first large-scale sexual harassment law suit. Other films that the NPA group has screened in the past include Boys Don’t Cry, Monster, and Sin City.
