Get Involved! >NPA > Sexism in Advertising Campaign

Every day, every one of us is bombarded by media images that make girls and women into dolls, toys, trash, and props.  Women of color are sometimes portrayed as exotic and animalistic.  Staging rape, stalking, and murder scenes are apparently acceptable ways to sell handbags.  On top of that, everything is permeated by sex, sex, sex.  Ever get fed up?  We do, too.

Each year, typically during the Winter semester, we hold a Sexism in Advertising Campaign to educate the campus community on the cultural impact of sexist and misogynistic imagery.  The Networking, Publicity, & Activism (NPA) volunteers select the ten most sexist and ten most progressive ads we can find and write letters to those companies.  These letters are signed by members of the campus community and describe why we find the advertisement particularly offensive or empowering. We then send the letters out by the hundreds and await the companies’ responses!
