i. Welcome to the new building of behalf of Dean Blank. History and brief info of Public Policy at U of M. The 1st group of undergrads will be entering the program next year. Check out the website for a list of coming events and research opportunities open to all students: http://www.fordschool.umich.edu/
ii. Thank you to SCOR for the work we do. In post-prop 2 environment our organization has become especially important in the eyes of many administrators.
i. This is a new opportunity being made available by Fall 2007 through CRLT to help synthesize grad students’ experiences that will qualify them for college level teaching.

i. Goals of SCPP: voice for PP students of color, community involvement, institutional advancement, professional development, & recruitment.
ii. What is public policy? Laws, regulations, rules both formal and informal that guide or influence the public sphere. This could be in an office or at a national political level. Anything from civil rights to trade policies qualify as public policy.
iii. There is a committee for institutional change within SCPP. The mission is to get the Ford School to work for us rather than the students of color having to do the extra work and teaching to get the things they need. Three major projects fall under this committee
1. Dean search to get new leadership for the post-prop 2 environment
2. Diversity scholars in Residence: visiting teachers from other institutions that will teach on race, gender and sexuality.
3. PhD network for other public policy PhD students throughout the country to possibly bring them here to the Ford School upon the completion of their degrees.
i. She’s been here 26 years! Wow!
ii. University Blueprints Task force… diversityblueprints@umich.edu send you input/comments for post-prop 2 to ccogburn@umich.edu, they will be passed on to Monique re recruitment, retention and funding to maintain and gain minority students. Rackham has added a personal statement as one effort to obtain more diverse students.
iii. Handout given for discussion with questions regarding attracting more diverse students. Lots of brainstorming about…
1. What could be added to the application process to attract a more diverse student body?
2. What attracted you to UM? What influenced your decision?
3. What impact did funding have on your decision to enroll?
iv. Introduction of Christine Melina who is on the blueprints sub-committee and Darlene Ray Johnson from the Rackham Student Affairs office both good contacts and resources for us if we have comments/suggestions.
i. Please sign up for Habitat dates! January 20th and March 10th. $10 a person. Email ccogburn@umich.edu if interested.
ii. Future Professions Academy needs help with essay writing on Monday the 15th. Sign up sheet at the front or email Courtney at ccogburn@umich.edu.
i. If your research is important submit it to the SCOR conference!!!!!!!
ii. This is the most important thing we do as an organization!
