Biography: As a young girl, Xena found her home of Amphipolis under siege by the forces of the warlord, Cortese. Xena, her mother, and younger brother Lyceus rallied their meager forces and struck back at Cortese's army, pushing the warlord back and reclaiming the village. Lyceus was killed in battle but Xena and her mother survived. Finding a sense of power in war, Xena leaves her mother to operate the family tavern and blazes her own trail of destruction. Raiders and mercenaries from across the world sought her out so that they might have a chance to join her ruthless and invincible army. She conquered kingdom upon kingdom in a short span of time. While abroad, Xena meets two powerful women, M'Lila and Lao Ma. They become her mentors, teaching her skills to aid her in battle and, more importantly, attempt to instill a sense of morality. Unfortunately, Xena does not fully understand the latter aspect of her mentor's teaching until much later. During this time, Xena and her fellow warlord, Borias, produce a son, Solan, whom Xena leaves with her mother for 9 years. Yet even throughout this dark period in her life, a flame of goodness still burned in her heart. Two events persuaded Xena finally to see the error of her ways: another baby and the mighty hero Hercules. Hercules helps to show her the path towards goodness. It is through his guidance that she finally begins to understand and accept what M'Lila and Lao Ma had tried to teach her many years before. Since then, she has come to rely on her best friend, Gabrielle, and her faithful horse, Argo, and has dedicated herself to fighting for the greater good.

An Education in Morality:  Xena is a prime example of a superheroine whose character has gradually evolved over the years. For many years, she was not the matriarch of good but rather fought in conjunction with other evil warlords. In fact, Xena's ruthless behavior was famous. Unlike other superheroines, Xena was not born inherently altruistic. There was always a sense of right and wrong present but her conscious was severely underdeveloped. It took the help of her teachers, M'Lila and Lao Ma, along with Hercules to make her see the error of her ways. Xena now fights against the very same people that she once aligned herself with. Although criminals often try to entice her to revert back to her evil ways, Xena is resolute to make up for sins past.
