CHAPTER SPONSORS FORUM ON
TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
The University of Michigan
Sigma Xi Chapter sponsored a forum
entitled "Technology Transfer: The Fourth Mission of the University"
at the University of Michigan Alumni Center on November 8, 1999. UM Vice-President for Research Fawwaz T.
Ulaby opened the forum with a discussion of technology transfer at the
University. He was followed by Marvin
G. Parnes, Executive Director of the Division of Research Development and
Administration and Interim Director of the Technology Management Office.
A panel of
present and former faculty members at the University of Michigan discussed
their experiences with technology transfer and management at the
University. Panelists included Edna A.
Coffin, Professor of Near Eastern Studies, James S. House, Professor of
Sociology and Director of the Institute of Social Research, Richard H. Sands,
Professor of Biophysics and Physics, and Jamey Weichert, Professor of Radiology
at the University of Wisconsin and a former faculty member in the College of
Pharmacy. President Emeritus Robben W.
Fleming presented a summary of the forum, made observations based on his own
experiences at the University of Michigan and at the University of Wisconsin
and made concluding remarks.
