General Information (back
to top)
When
is Kids-Fair and how long will it last?
This year's Kids-Fair is on March 6, 2009. It will take place at Crisler
Arena and will run from 9m to 1pm. As a student group, you will be
responsible for arriving at Crisler Arena at 8am to set up and will
stay until 1pm.
How do I sign my student
group up?
You can
sign up online at www.umich.edu/~kidsfair.
The final deadline to sign up is February 13th, 2009.
So
I heard there's a theme this year. What is it?
Kids
Karnival!
Crisler Arena
will be split into four zones through which the pen pals and buddies
will rotate throughout the day. Your job is to think of a booth idea
that would fit into these zones.
My group signed
up for Kids-Fair. What do we do now?
Once
your group has signed up for Kids-Fair, you will be contacted immediately
by an Outreach member who will set up a time to meet and work with
you to design a fun and education booth idea. All of the details of
Kids-Fair will be outlined and discussed when you meet with your Outreach
member. If you do not hear from your Outreach member within one week
of the time that you signed up, please contact us at kidsfair@umich.edu.
What
are the ages of the kids coming to the event?
The kids
are all elementary school students, ranging from 1st-5th grade (6-11
years old).
How many people are supposed
to be at the booth at all times?
At
minimum, there should be 2-3 people at your booth from 8am until 1pm.
If your activity needs more people to supervise, then you should have
as many people there as necessary.
Do we have to provide our own supplies?
Yes. Your student
group will provide all the necessary supplies for your booth activity.
There are over 1,000 kids at Kids-Fair, and your student group must
have enough supplies for each elementary school student. Please choose
a booth idea that is within your budget so that you don’t run out
of supplies on the day of Kids-Fair. If you have a concern regarding
this, please email kidsfair@umich.edu.
On Your Way to Kids-Fair
How do I get to
Kids-Fair?
Traveling
by Bus: Just
hop on the Southbound
Commuter bus from any of the many bus stops on Observatory, Zina
Pitcher, South University, C.C. Little, and Pierpont commons.
The bus will drop you off right in front of Crisler Arena, on south
campus, from there just follow the signs to the entrance.
Traveling by
Car: If you drive yourself to Crisler Arena, you can park your
car in the lot between the Big House and Crisler Arena. Just enter
in Gate 9, off of Keech St.
How
often do the buses run?
Every 10 minutes, so you
will not have to wait long. Please plan ahead and try to be
a few minutes early.
Where
do I go when I get to Crisler Arena?
Traveling by Car: If
you're traveling to Crisler by car, you can park inside Gate 9, between
the Big House and Crisler Arena. Enter through the doors labeled "Student
Group Entrance" and check-in at the table through the doors.
Traveling by
Bus: If you're traveling to Crisler by bus, you will be dropped
off by the main entrance of Crisler. Simply go up the steps to the
main doors. Stop at the Main Check-In and tell the volunteers at check-in
that you're a member of your student group. Pick up an official program
and map, and you'll be directed to the zone that corresponds with
your student group.
What to know at Kids-Fair (back
to top)
How
does my group know where to set up?
When your group arrives
at Kids-Fair at 8am, you will check-in with a K-grams volunteer. Upon
check-in, you'll receive an informational packet, containing a map
of Kids-Fair and other important details of the event. The K-grams
volunteers will direct you to where your booth has been placed in
Crisler.
How
is Crisler Arena divided?
Crisler will be divided
into four different zones. Your student group will be placed in one
of the zones and will remain there throughout the day.
How
will we know when a shift has ended?
There are 5 shifts
during Kids-Fair (4 during which the kids will be at your booths and
1 for lunch). Each shift is 40 minutes, except for lunch, which is
30 minutes. When a shift has ended, "The Victors" will play
over the loudspeaker. The kids will then rotate between
the 4 different gates in Crisler.
How many kids will be
coming to our booth at once?
There will be approximately
7-10 younger kids in each group with a parent/teacher and 3-6 college
buddies. Remember to talk to the kids and encourage them to participate
in your activity.
Will
the tables be decorated (tablecloth, balloons, etc.)? Can we decorate
them ourselves?
The
booths will be covered by a tablecloth, but you are certainly welcome
to decorate it. Please remember that there is NO PROPAGANDA for your
student group or other items promoting your student group, except
for a posterboard with your group's name on it.
Will
lunch be provided or should I pack my own?
Each group will have two
lunch tickets (lunch is pizza). Beyond that, each group member who
is at Kids-Fair during lunch (11:20am-11:50am) is responsible for
bringing his/her own lunch. Food will NOT be sold at Crisler during
Kids-Fair, so please be sure to bring something to eat!
What
if I need something or have questions during Kids-Fair?
Your Outreach
member is your main contact person during Kids-Fair. If you have questions,
please ask him/her. If you cannot find your Outreach member during
the day, you can ask any K-grams volunteer for help.
So you're at Kids-Fair and...
What if, at the last minute, my
group can't participate?
If a conflict arises that prevents your group from attending Kids-Fair
at the last minute, please contact your Outreach member immediately.
What
if I have to leave in the middle of a shift?
If you must leave
in the middle of a shift, be sure that there are enough student group
volunteers at your booth to cover the shift. There should be AT LEAST
2 volunteers at the booth at all times.
Many
of our group members would like to hang out with the kids during the
day. Is this possible?
Your group
members can hang out with the elementary kids all day, as long as
your booth has enough help. Just tell your group members to sign up
to be a Buddy ONLINE at www.umich.edu/~kidsfair.
