SPC Main Page

Below is a brief listing of the various leadership roles of the SPC that are offered in K-grams. They should give you an overview of the positions and expectations of the people in their positions. Don't forget that there are also many other levels of volunteering in K-grams, from Swing Kids to pen pals and in-between. This is simply the overview of it all!

Executive Director

The Executive Director serves as the chief officer for all of K-grams and its programming. S/he represents the organization externally to all communities and generates initiatives and support for all internal issues. The Executive Director oversees the entire programming processes while setting the agenda and scope of weekly functions, as well as long-range objectives. S/he works on pulling together all parts of the program in order to shape and promote the mission and goals of K-grams.

Associate Director

The Associate Director works directly with the Executive Director and other Directors to coordinate all major events and ensure the overall operation of the program. S/he is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with all univeristy and non-university sponsors. Additionally, s/he is responsible for ensuring the successful function of the committees (Publications, Events, and Social Appreciation), and organizaing the council banquet at the end of the year. Together, the Associate and Executive Directors make up the Executive Team, which is instrumental in making all major decisions and ensuring the day-to-day success of K-grams.

Pen Pal Directors

The Pen Pal Directors oversee all interactions between the college and elementary school pen pals and ensure that the pen pal program is running smoothly and efficiently. Working closely with the Hall Heads, they assure that all letters are collected and delivered to the schools and help to plan edu-active classroom projects and other elementary events throughout the year, such as college day, and campus visits. Working with Hall Heads, Swing Kids, and other Directors, the Pen Pal Directors work to create positive relationships between and among college and elementary pen pals and ensure the continued, overall success of the pen pal letter exchange and project planning.

Hall Heads

Each Hall Head has a partner with whom they work directly throughout the entire year. Each Hall Head team facilitates the core letter exchange program and ensures timely collection and delivery of all pen pal letters each month, as well as creates and executes edu-active (educational and interactive) projects in each classroom. They work to build community between pen pals, Swing Kids, and teachers, and also help pen pals to become further involved in K-grams. In addition, they help increase the college pen pal's connection with her/his elementary pen pal, and with the program as a whole. Hall Heads are the link between the elementary schools, college pen pals, and the SPC.

Swing Kids
Swing Kids supervise the letter collection each month and encourage college pen pal involvement for one elementary school classroom. Swing Kids work together with their Hall Heads and the other Swing Kids to develop a sense of pride and community within the hall. The Swing Kids are an integral part of K-grams, as they serve as the direct link between the college pen pals and the rest of the program. Swing Kids are the pen pals' source of information about letters, projects, and other kids programs.

Elementary Programming Director

The Elementary Programming Director oversees the BookMARK (Mentoring And Reading with Kids) program and is in charge of maintaining year-long contact with elementary schools. S/he is in charge of planning and organizing K-Day. This role entails a great deal of interaction with other people through email, phone, and meetings, plus the coordination of many volunteers.

S/he is in charge of organizing BookMARK Coordinators and volunteers for each session, coordinating transportation, responding to questions and concerns of volunteers, and setting up session dates and times with teachers at the beginning of each semester.

The Elementary Programming Director is also responsible for seeking additional ways to become more involved in the elementary schools through venues such as PTO's and school events throughout the year. S/he also sets up all preliminary conversations between teachers and Hall Heads at the beginning of each year, and remains the resource for any questions in regards to school policy and information.

BookMARK Coordinator

BookMARK Coordinators supervise and organize a weekly BookMARK session. Their role includes contacting and coordinating all volunteers for the weekly session, communicating with their BookMARK teacher to ensure success of their session, and meeting with the BookMARK Director and other Coordinators for weekly updates. Through constant communication and initiative the BookMARK Coordinators ensure the daily success of each individual session, while at the same time working to strengthen the BookMARK program as a whole.

Outreach Directors

The Outreach Directors work internally with K-grams and also externally with the campus community. These Directors oversee the recruitment of college student group participation in Kids-Fair. They also work with their team and the other Directors to develop publicity, advertising, and logistics of major events such as Welcome Week events, Festifall, K-grams Gym Night, and Kids-Fair. A major goal of the Outreach Directors is to create and maintain campus enthusiasm about K-grams.

Outreach Team

The Outreach Team is an integral part of K-grams. Team members focus on many tasks throughout the year in order to spread information about K-grams to the campus community and develop and execute strategic plans for volunteer recruitment, event logistics, and publicizing K-grams to university students. In addition, this team helps prepare marketing materials (e.g. Diag boards, banners, signs, etc.), as well as help handle logistics to ensure events and activities run smoothly.

Finance-Fundraising Director

The Finance-Fundraising Director would be in charge of all financial aspects of the organization. This includes collecting receipts and processing reimbursements for the SPC. S/he works with the Executive Director to plan the yearly and semester budgets, and oversee all K-grams related accounts. This role also includes the planning and execution of various fundraising events throughout the year to secure funding for all K-grams operations.

  • Publications Committee: Designs the pen pal newsletters and programs for Kids-Fair, and maintains the website.
  • Events Committee: Organizes and executes the logistics of major events and fundraisers throughout the year.
