If you want to advertise on the campus "blue" buses, this is the right place!

Please take a few minutes to read the following points before completing the request form below.

  • This and other SORC advertising services are for student organizations and university departments only.
  • SORC clerks are available to assist you during regular business hours. Just call 734-764-0436 or AIM "sorcclerk" during these times if you have any troubles with this form or general questions about the bus sign advertising service.
  • You will need to submit a separate request for each reservation.
    • If there are multiple start dates or multiple sets of signs, each of these is considered a separate order.
    • If you want us to put up 60 signs, even if they are simply duplicates of the same ad, you will need to complete this form twice.
  • If a period is full, you cannot choose a date before and after that period and expect the signs to stay up for the duration. If, for example, you would like to reserve a period of six weeks, but one of the weeks in the middle of this range is identified as "full," you would have to submit two separate reservation requests and two separate sets of bus signs.
  • It is not possible to have a set of bus signs go up, come down, and use the entire set again. You are always welcome to reclaim signs that are taken down, but they do not all come down at once, and they are sometimes damaged during takedown. If you have the need to place the same ads multiple times during the semester, you must be prepared to print more signs.  Read why.

  • Your organization must not violate any University of Michigan content, trademark, or name usage policies. These are explained in greater detail below.
  • Bus signs must be the proper size and must be glue-mounted on poster board of the proper thickness.  Free samples are available at SORC; printers refer to this as “railroad board.”  At significant expense, signs can be printed directly on a product of appropriate thickness by a professional printer.  However, it is important to note that cardstock is not thick enough.  Likewise, copy machines are generally not suitable for poster board. If you can run it through a copy machine, it's probably not thick enough!
  • Submitting a request constitutes a financial obligation to SORC for the cost of the space.  Emailing a few days later to cancel will not necessarily guarantee a full refund.  Read SORC’s cancellation policy here.
  • Payment must be made by transfer of funds. As long as the space is available, there is no further information needed for departmental reservations. For student organizations, however, there is an additional step in the approval process:
    • SORC clerks will forward the request to the person listed as the authorized signer.
    • That person will need to reply to SORC's email from their umich.edu e-mail account to authorize the transfer of funds from the SOAS account number provided.
    • SORC will verify funds and authorized signer status with SOAS; the contract is then final.

Start Date, Take-down Date, and Size

Option 1: Sunday-to-Sunday placement

  • Bus signs during the school year (through end of April, and again starting late August):
    • Sunday bus signs are placed at around 12pm on Sundays during the scool year (through 4/22).
    • SORC is closed on Saturdays, so you must turn in your signs before 6PM on Friday.
    • If you need SORC to glue-mount them onto poster board, they are due by 11PM on Thursday.
    • Deadlines vary around peak times and slow times such as Winter Break, Spring Break, and Exam week.
    • Allow us as much time as possible, especially if you need us to glue-mount the signs for you.
  • Bus signs during the spring/summer (April 30 through August 26):
    • Bus signs are placed on Monday evenings during the summer.
    • SORC is closed on weekend, so you must turn in your signs before 4PM on Friday.
    • If you need SORC to glue-mount them onto poster board, they are due by 4PM on Thursday.
    • Due to low demand, new bus signs are placed only once every four weeks. If bus signs are not submitted before the deadline, there is no late placement option.
    • Space rental is 50% off.

Option 2: Thursday-to-Thursday placement

  • Thursday-to-Thursday reservations are not available in the Spring and Summer.
  • Thursday-to-Thursday bus signs are placed at around midnight on Friday mornings (Thursday nights) during the academic year.
    • Glued bus signs are due at SORC on Thursday before 5PM.
      • Don't expect to see your signs, however, until Friday morning.
    • If you need SORC to glue-mount them onto poster board, they are due by 11PM on Wednesday.
    • Deadlines vary around peak times and slow times such as Winter Break, Spring Break, and Exam week.
    • Allow us as much time as possible, especially if you need us to glue-mount the signs for you.
  • Reservations for May through mid-September will begin in April.

Acknowledgement of Content Requirements

 

SORC honors and enforces all University of Michigan trademark and logo usage policies, including but not limited to:

  • The name of the department or student organization must appear on all SORC advertising materials in letters of appropriate size and visibility. 
  • The name of the student organization must be used exactly as it is registered with MSA, both on the contract and on the advertisements that are submitted to SORC. Acronyms are not acceptable.
  • Voluntary Student Organizations (VSOs) cannot use any University of Michigan trademarks on SORC advertising materials. This includes the Block M, the split-block M, use of “University of Michigan” preceding the organization name, the “University of Michigan” wordmark, and the seal of the University of Michigan.
  • University departments and Sponsored Student Organization (SSOs) may use the above items, but must meet University of Michigan specifications for color, size, etc., and may not alter the Block M or any trademark.
  • If the organization is an SSO, it is the advertiser's responsibility to provide written or online verification of sponsorship before materials bearing University trademarks are submitted to SORC for placement. 
  • If someone from the organization submits materials that do not meet content or other requirements, the group is not eligible for a refund or dismissal of late fees to allow time to produce new signs that meet the requirements.

Terms of Request

 

This form is a request only. Completion of the form does not constitute a contract with SORC.

A SORC clerk will reply via e-mail if your reservation is accepted. If space is unavailable, the clerk will e-mail you alternative advertising opportunities. Requests will be processed in the order in which they are received. If you have not received a reply from a SORC clerk within 48 hours (2 business days), e-mail sorc@umich.edu.
