Info & Referral Services

The SORC is designed to complement the services provided by Campus Information Centers (CIC) and the Office of Student Activities and Leadership (SAL) by providing the campus with an additional information outlet.  We strive to provide current, accurate information to and about student organizations.  Here are just a few of the things we can help you with:

Getting involved in a student organization
  Starting a new student organization
  Promoting your event on campus
Finding out what services and resources are available on campus for student organizations
  Reserving various campus facilities
Building hours, maps, and information about the Michigan Union, Michigan League, & Pierpont Commons

We also act as liaison between the Michigan Union and the student organizations that occupy the 4th floor offices.  Here are some of the many 4th floor activities we advise groups about:

            Office usage agreements
            Office access
            Posting of group office hours
            Referral for custodial services
            Referral for maintenance requests
Referral for Ethernet connection and telephone acquisition

  Other important information:

            Reserving the Diag

Press releases vs. public service announcements

  Miscellaneous U of M event-related services

  Campus / Regional media outlets

Reserving the Diag

(Excerpt of email circulated by Michigan Student Assembly on 9/20/01)

The reservation process is articulated in the policy for the Scheduled Use of the University of Michigan Outdoor Common Areas.  You may obtain the policy in its entirety from the Office of Student Activities & Leadership (SAL).  In addition, to reserve the Diag you must do so through the Office of Student Leadership, 2205 Michigan Union.  We ask that you respect the following as part of the Diag registration process:

           1. Reservations will not be taken over the phone.  You must come into the SAL office to make your reservation.  There are no exceptions.
2. Only the authorized signers of a SOAS or departmental account may sign the Diag authorization form on the occasions that power and/or amplification is being requested.
3. Only MSA registered student organizations and/or University departments may reserve the Diag.
4. The Diag is reserved on a first come, first served basis.  SAL staff will not give out the name of a group who has already reserved the Diag for a particular day, outside of our usual and customary process of sharing information with other related University departments.

Additional information concerning the Diag is available by contacting the Office of Student Activities & Leadership, 763-5900.

Press Releases VS. Public Service Announcements

Press Releases

A news account written to inform the media of the events and/or activities that your student organization is planning.

Should be written in short paragraphs stating who, what, when, where, why, and how.

Should be sent to newspapers, magazines, radio, and television stations (when applicable).

  Press releases are news oriented.

Public Service Announcements

An abbreviated form of a press release.  Announces a non-profit organization's upcoming events or activities.

Sent to radio and television stations (send radio stations a press release and a public service announcement if the event is non-profit).

Should be ONE paragraph long.  Indicate the approximate amount of time it takes to read the PSA (15, 30, or 60 seconds).

  PSAs are event oriented.
