Finished product:

  During Deck construction we got an unexpected visit from a huge snapping turtle.  Carpenter Kevin nicknamed him "Tippy."  He took up residence under the garden hose reel, and stuck around near our foundation for a few hours after Derek discovered him.  It wasn't long before the cats sensed his presence, and of course they had to check him out....

In April 2003, not quite a year after the deck was complete, Derek decided that the steps off the back needed to be widened.

Around that same time, we dug a trench around the deck and added landscaper's edging and decorative granite stone, making mowing a LOT easier:
