You do not need to bring a partner as the class will rotate regularly. This will give you a chance to dance with people of varying experience levels. Occasionally you may dance with a male follow or female lead; these are usually experienced dancers looking to refine their ability. If you are taking the lesson, please attempt to do what the instructors are teaching, especially if you have already learned how to do it a different way! There are many "right" ways of doing something, and you will probably learn different methods from different teachers. Which Class Should I Choose? There are 3 factors to consider when choosing a class: the type of class, the level of instruction, and the dance being taught. See below to choose the classes that are right for you. Drop-in vs. SeriesWe have two primary types of lessons: drop-in and series. Each type of lesson is offered for a variety of types of dances and at a variety of levels. A drop-in lesson is a lesson where you can just show up. It is self-contained. You can come to one week's drop-in lesson without having been to the prior lessons; the lessons do not build on one another. Drop-in lessons are included in the price for the evening dance. (Or rather, the dance is included in the price of the drop-in lessons.) A series lesson is held as a series of lessons that build upon one another. Right now, our series lessons are month-long classes that start on the first Wednesday of the month. Just like you wouldn't start calculus in the middle of the semester, it's not a great idea to start a series in the middle of the month. If you would like to start a series in the middle, please talk to the teachers first to make sure it's ok with them. Beginner vs. IntermediateWe tend to offer classes at two levels: beginning and intermediate. A beginner only needs to know where their feet are. They should also probably be able to find their arms. But that's it! Beginning classes are for people who've never done any dancing ever, or for people who are convinced that their dancing is embarrassing, or for people wanting to become more solid in their basics. These classes will get you out on the floor and feeling confident. Beginning classes are also for people who want to perfect their dancing essentials. This is especially true of Lindy Hop. Everyone's dancing quality would be improved through re-visiting beginning Lindy Hop periodically. The best dancers in the world still work on refining their swing out, and could probably teach a whole series on the rock-step alone. Intermediate classes require previous knowledge of the given dance. If you want to take the Intermediate Lindy Hop class, you should be comfortable doing a swing out, a lindy circle and a tuck turn. If you don't know how to lead or follow these moves, you'll probably feel lost at best and discouraged at worst in an intermediate class.
The majority of dancers should take at least a couple months' worth of Beginning Lindy Hop classes before taking the Intermediate Lindy Hop classes. Styles of DanceSwing, like ballroom, is not a single dance but rather a family or genre of dances with some shared aspects. Swing Ann Arbor focuses on east coast or "6-count" swing and lindy hop. We also love our charleston, and sometimes offer classes in solo jazz. What are all these different kinds of dancing? What We Don't TeachWe do not teach what are called aerials or airsteps. These are usually show or competition moves where your partner's feet leave the ground. They have no place on the social dance floor where you could cause someone a nice kick in the head, drop and injure your partner, or at the very least scare an unsuspecting follow who suddenly finds herself in the air. If you perform aerials on the dance floor on Wednesday nights, you will be asked to leave. A reputation like that will precede you. Airsteps are akin to gymnastics, and if you are interested you should seek an experienced instructor. |
