Minutes of SAA open meeting 10 Nov 2008

People: Holly, Wayne (minute-taker), Katie, Bryn, Sam, Zack, Maura. Matteo (President) absent due to imminent/impertinent school project.

1. Katie, Matteo, Windsor John suggest bringing in Barbara Morrison, blues singer.
Bryn and Zack et al prefer weekend rather than Wed. However we have exceeded the room limit (10-12 per account per semester). But Maura worked magic and currently we are set until Sept 2009.
Katie: perhaps Night Club can do it.
Zack: necessary inquiries to BM: availability on select dates, cost.
Holly: possible location The Grange. But it is large. Cost?
Maura: it is possible to set up a ticket thing through UM.
Holly: do we want to have the dance anyway if BM not available?
Zack: Firefly?

2. Maura will get rooms in Mason Hall (which are free of charge), circa Jan/Feb for Kurt to teach workshop.

3. Zack: "Pay at DJ booth after 10:30PM" sign was packed up prematurely and resulted in a couple of free admissions on a few occasions.

4. Maura and Zack: volunteer coordinating not organized enough. Maura: get Matteo to talk to Paul, perhaps with the goal to get someone new (Katie's willing). Also get from Paul the volunteer list. Kurt's system worked before: we just need a schedule and it would be up to the volunteer to bring up time conflicts.

5. T-shirts -
Bryn: Navy blue w/ yellow
Katie: talked to a t-shirt company.
Zack: Ascott is a "phenomenal" company. 663-2023. Estimated cost for our design: $6-7/shirt.
Holly: Adrians is another company.
Zack: how many of each size.
Holly: prefers baby-doll Ts.
Maura: advertise and take orders at dances.
Zack: Have a prototype shirt or full color printout.
Katie: will get quote so and intend to begin taking pre-orders this Wed. Bryn will send design to her.

6. Flyering and assessment
Katie: need updated images.
Bryn, Maura Katie have been doing some.
Bryn: how have the turn-out been?
Zack: How are the finances?
Sam: We are still on the border. We definitely need to do better.
Zack: requests a summary of take and costs. Assess correlation with flyering.
Holly: contact the contingents from Hillsdale, Kalamazoo, Lansing etc. and coordinate with them.
Zack: Attract more community members who have potential to be stable.A stable group of people is beneficial. Student turnover rate may be unstable. (Note: the position of some members, including the President and VP, is that since SAA is a student organization, funded and supported by UM with benefits and services paid for by UM student's tuition, we should focus on being a student base for swing dancing in Ann Arbor)
Holly: Organize trips. Wayne agrees.
Bryn: bulletin board on website for organizing events.

Non-SAA news:
Dec. 13 Windsor John will be back and do lessons. Also there will be a service to put leather on shoes.
Same format: Friday, Friday late night, Sat., Sat lessons, 2nd Sat dance, Sat latenight, Sunday lessons, Firefly. Location: Lindy House.
