ICP-OES Analysis
Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectroscopy
Instrument Information:
![]() | The instrument used is a Perkin-Elmer Optima 2000 DV with Winlab software. This instrument can analyze aqueous solutions for metals with either a Radial or an Axial plasma configuration. In Axial mode, you can generally achieve a 5-10 ppb detection limit, depending upon the element. Organic solvents may be used instead of aqueous solutions if the instrument is re-configured with a different injector and different tubing. |

Cost for UM student use: $11 per hour for UM shortcode accounts |
What Types of Samples Can Be Analyzed?
You can analyze any solids, liquids, or oils that are capable of being fully digested by concentrated acids. Concentrated acids commonly used to digest the samples are nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrofluoric acid. Samples dissolved in organic solvents may be run if the instrument is re-configured and re-optimized.
