Micromass TofSpec-2E
Matrix-Assisted, Laser-Desorption Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer
The Micromass TofSpec-2E is a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer that is capable of operating in either Linear or Reflectron modes. It can be used in reflectron mode with unit mass resolution up to around 5000 daltons, to analyze peptides or small polymers. The instrument can also be operated in low resolution linear mode to analyze proteins or large polymers. It also has a high mass, post acceleration dynode detector, which can be used to enhance weak mass signals from very large molecules over 100,000 daltons. The instrument uses a 96 spot plate, and can be set up to do automatic data acquisition on each spot within the plate. This instrument is available for student hands-on use. If you need to use this instrument, please e-mail Jim Windak to schedule a training session. You will need a six-digit short code account number to use for billing your access time. The cost is $27 per hour for UM shortcode accounts, and $65 per hour for non-UM accounts. Prior to the training session, you should print out and read the TofSpec User's Booklet. You will also need to purchase a sample plate from Micromass for your own use.
Micromass LCT
Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer with Electrospray and APCI
The Micromass LCT is a benchtop time-of-flight mass spectrometer with Electrospray and APCI ionization modes. It has an HPLC pump with with a Rheodyne loop injector, and also a syringe pump for sample introduction. It is capable of operating in either positive ion or negative ion mode. It is generally used for organic molecules that have a mass range of 100-1500 daltons. However, it can also be used to analyze larger molecules such as peptides or proteins. It has transform software for deconvoluting multiply charged ion peaks of large molecules, such as proteins. It can also do exact mass measurements on small molecules, generally to within 5 ppm for masses in the range of 400-1000 daltons. The instrument is available for student hands-on use. To use the instrument, please e-mail Jim Windak to schedule a training session. You will need a six-digit short code account number to use for billing your access time. The cost is $30 per hour for UM shortcode accounts, and $65 per hour for non-UM accounts. Prior to the training session, you should print out and read the LCT User's Booklet.
Micromass AutoSpec Ultima
Magnetic sector mass spectrometer
The Micromass Ultima is a high resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometer that is capable of analyzing small organic molecules using EI, CI or Electrospray. It is capable of doing
both low resolution, full mass range scans, as well as high resolution, exact
mass measurements. The exact mass measurements are generally accurate to within a few PPM on positive ions for masses up to 1500 daltons. Samples to be analyzed on this
instrument are submitted along with a Sample Submission Form.
Turn-around times are generally within 2-3 working days.
Sample fees are as follows:
Low resolution, nominal mass scan:
$19 for UM shortcode accounts.
$30 for non-UM accounts.
High resolution, exact mass measurement (includes a nominal mass scan):
$26 for UM shortcode accounts
$40 for non-UM accounts.
Finnigan Trace GC/MS
The Finnigan Trace GC/MS is available
for hands-on use by graduate students who need to run their own samples. It has
a quadrupole mass spectrometer capable of unit mass resolution. The gas chromatograph
is a Finnigan Trace GC 2000, with a DB-1 capillary column installed in a split injector. The split ratio is 1:100.
The column is 25 meters long, and has a 0.2 mm I.D. and a .33 micron film thickness. Students who have a need to use this instrument should e-mail Jim
Windak to schedule a 30-minute training session. You will also need to provide
an account number to use for billing your access time. The rates are $11 per hour
for UM shortcode accounts, and $65 per hour for non-UM
users. Prior to the training session, you should print out and read the user's
booklet.
VG (Micromass) 70-250-S
Magnetic sector mass spectrometer
The VG 70-250-S
mass spectrometer is a high resolution, magnetic sector instrument that is capable
of analyzing small organic molecules by EI, CI, or FAB. It is capable of doing
both low resolution, full mass range scans, as well as high resolution, exact
mass measurements. The exact mass measurements are generally accurate to within
5 PPM on positive ions for masses under 1000 Da.
