Mission Statement
- The Mixed Initiative is a student group designed to celebrate and educate about
what it means to be mixed. Our meetings involve discussion about our varying
experiences, and how we feel about issues facing our community.
- Because we
believe in the diversity of thought in the mixed race community, our meetings
are open to anyone who is interested in learning more—our members have
included, for example, faculty and staff, undergraduates, graduate students,
high schoolers, transracial adoptees, and people in interracial relationships.
- Besides our regular discussions, the Mixed Initiative works to provide an array
of activities. Over the past five years that the mixed Initiative has been
around, we have sponsored panel discussions, guest speakers, and conferences.
- Each year we participate in a community service project called Mixtorship where
we do multicultural activities with Ann Arbor children at the YMCA. The Mixed
Initiative also has a social aspect, and we put on functions such as movie
nights, bowling outings, and potlucks.
