Mental Health: The Hidden Face of the Model Minority
Presenter: Jason Cheng (4th year medical student)
This lecture will be an overview of the mental health needs of the Asian American community. Despite the media image of the "model minority," there are unique psychiatric problems in the Asian American population which need to be addressed. The talk will be a succinct overview of the problems, barriers to care, and future directions in the field of cultural psychiatry.

Oral Health and You!
Presenters: Nancy Lam, Kim Lin, and Amy Liao (UMAD)
In this interactive workshop we will discuss cultural perspectives of oral health, the importance of oral health to systemic health, and how we can improve our oral health to ultimately improve our quality of life.

"Cha-no-yu", A Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony
Presenters: Tomoyo Koehler, Sanae Iwata, Wakako Maeda, and Yuri Yamaguchi
The ceremony of drinking tea is very important in Japanese culture. Come observe and participate in a demonstration of this special ceremony.

Theater as a Tool for Social Change
Presenters: New Visions - Alliance to End Violence in Asian/Asian American Communities
This interactive workshop will focus on how to use theater to raise awareness about social justice issues, specifically domestic violence amongst Asian/Asian American women. Participants will engage in fun icebreakers, watch a performance by the New Visions Arts & Activism Community Action Team about domestic violence and the medical field, and have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions in a thoughtful dialogue.


Block B (2:10-3:00)

Medical Student Question and Answer Panel
Presenters: David Lee, Anuja Jain, Wenfei Xie, and Michael Mashiba
This is a chance for pre-medical students and community members to talk to medical students about choosing medicine, the application process, medical school life, the challenges of being an Asian medical student, and anything else they would like to know.

Environmental Effects on Asian Health
Presenters: Rieza Soelaeman and Nicole Kwon (Asian American Public Health Association)
Brownfields are abandoned, idled, or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contaminations. Land that is more severely contaminated and has high concentrations of hazardous waste or pollution are known as Superfund or hazardous waste sites, and is the common name for the United States environmental law created to protect people and communities from heavily contaminated toxic wastes sites that have been abandoned. However, environmental deterioration does not impact everyone equally. AAPHA will present their findings on how Brownfields and the Superfund in city planning have affected Asians and Asian health both domestically and abroad.

Metabolic Syndromes in the South Asian Population
Presenters: Dr. Kirit Tolia
Dr. Kirit Tolia is a practicing endocrinologist in the Detroit Metro Area. His talk will focus on Metabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance, Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes Prevention. Following the presentation, he will be happy to take individual questions from the audience.
